"clipboard" ; where went ye?
When I was given this unit (2nd hand)in Feb., an OEM
version of W98 was in it, concerted with OE&IE 4.0. I gradually learned that these accoutrements had something to do with what made it go and that was good enough for me. I was so green, I confused vegetarians. I did not know until recently what an OEM was, much less that the "Computer Essentials" portion of "Welcome to Windows" did not come with it. I offer this as a prefatory apologetic to MSNG in case my question(s) might suggest I'm not doing reasonable homework, when in fact I've been spending hours trying to do just that. A number of features used to be available on my unit which seem to have got abducted or purged. I applied the SP 6.1(twice; 1st time, Start & its Toolbar didn't return) in order to access to a specific feature I needed, viz. 128 encryption, and later I installed MS Security Update CD. Prior to these operations, I had a "Clipboard" in my Accessories menu, OE had "Spellcheck", My Documents provided a "Preview" option (Windows Folder still does) and something I hadn't gotten around to called "Excel" is no longer there, although I have files in something called Hello:/C for it. My |Help|Search|Clipboard| indicates a download is available if that item should be discovered to be missing, but @ Downloads |W98|Clipboard| only peripheral/adjuncts to it appear to be mentioned; unless I am misunderstanding the text. I am confident the above features were there originally. I've never laid hands on another pc in my life so it isn't a case of confusing one with another. My Q. is: are (any of) these appurtenances retrievable or is it just another case of 'canis meus id comedit'? rooster |

Sorry, but I am snipping down to what I can follow and what seems
relevant to your subject header. You are not missing the Clipboard. You are missing the Clipboard Viewer. If you want the Clipboard Viewer, then reinstall it. Control Panel-Add/Remove-Windows Setup-System Tools-Clipboard Viewer You may have to uncheck it if it is checked, exit Windows Setup then go back in and check it. Have your Win98 CD ready. Bear in mind, the Clipboard Viewer is not essential and is a rather poor viewer. I have not had it installed in Windows for many years. ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, "rooster" wrote: Prior to these operations, I had a "Clipboard" in my Accessories menu |

Did you follow up with the rest of the critical updates needed after Oct. 2003 from the MS Update site? Prior to these operations, I had a "Clipboard" in my Accessories menu, Control Panel Add/Remove Programs Windows Setup tab Accessories. Is Clipboard checked? If not it isn't installed. If it is, try unchecking it Apply Ok out, reboot and go back and recheck it. OE had "Spellcheck", Spellcheck comes along with a text editor when installed, like MS Word. My Documents provided a "Preview" option (Windows Folder still does) Right click the folder. Is Thumbnail Preview checked? and something I hadn't gotten around to called "Excel" is no longer there, although I have files in something called Hello:/C for it. Excel is part of Office either installed with the Office Suite or separately. It does not come with any OS that I know of. But the Spellcheck issue didn't resolve. I laid out some add'l info specific to your comments which might help but I am afraid it might be a tad longish.(Surprise!) I used Wordpad. If you are still amenable to seeing what might be done, please let me know via this thread what the best way to procede is, eg. what buttons do I push to get W'pad text to where it needs to go? rooster |

... snipped (Surprise!) I used Wordpad. Suprise! As you already know, Wordpad does not have spellchecking. I mentioned MS Word which is also a part of the MS Office Suite, not Wordpad. I've always had Office so I never had the need to look for a spellchecker. Do a search on the web using the words " OE Spellchecker ", there's a couple free ones out there. Can't help you on which one is better than the other, maybe others will chime back in. If you are still amenable to seeing what might be done, please let me know via this thread what the best way to procede is, eg. what buttons do I push to get W'pad text to where it needs to go? That's a mighty vague question. Are you still talking about spellcheck or are you now onto cut/copy/paste or something other? -- Brian A. Jack of all trades, Master of none. But I don't understand how to send contents of W'pad to MSNG, ie., "What buttons do I push?" I've already made a blunder or two posting to MSNG, like hitting "Tab" and sending just a fragment of a post, as well as losing intended posts altogether while poking around in other windows for the ingredients. Hopefully, what I have written there will help someone provide answers about missing features. It contains 67 lines of text. I am worried that amount of text would make me look hoggish in addition to dumb and I would appreciate being assured I am going about this correctly, or if alternatives exist. rooster aut viam invenium aut faciam |

Wordpad and Notepad ( which you also have ) are bottom bottom of the heap text editors. AFAIK there is no way to "Send To" an NG from either. Although you can click on the menu bar File Send ( at least in the one that comes with XP ). That will open an OE message window with the file attached and I suggest you don't even go that route, sending attachments in an NG is a big NO NO unless someone specifically asks for it which is very rare. Copy/Paste is your best bet from either app and there are several ways to do it. Copy/paste the instructions from my second response to this in any of the ways mentioned, then you have it for future reference. The second response is to help keep this one shorter. I've already made a blunder or two posting to MSNG, like hitting "Tab" and sending just a fragment of a post, as well as losing intended posts altogether while poking around in other windows for the ingredients. Patience and use will make that subside as the days/yrs go by. I still shutdown apps unintentionally while bouncing between them. Hopefully, what I have written there will help someone provide answers about missing features. It contains 67 lines of text. Actually you are better off asking about a few at a time to keep any confusion at a low. I wouldn't even give looking dumb another thought, we all started out the same way. -- Brian A. Brian;
Cosmic!!! I typed your "methods" into my notepad. I'll try it out with what I have in W'Pad after I make a few alt/edits. 'In vita brevis', I know; but it is hard to know how much background info is germane to eliciting informed replies when you are as green as spinach. The optics of this thread compared to others suggest to me starting a new one. I'll use, "W98: Missing Features". I learned about the nix on attachments by reading a response from another MVP earlier. That's why I didn't even consider it. rooster -----Original Message----- Copy/paste is simple, you can do it several different ways. #1 is the quickest: Press CTRL+A------This will hilite all Press CTRL+C------This will copy all that's hilit Press CTRL+V------This will paste all that was copied #2: Press the left mouse button once at the beginning of the text to be copied.-----This places the blinking cursor at the beginning of the text to be copied.
