Please wait while Setup updates...
For past several days I have noticed when I turn on my
notebook (Win98se), every so often, the phrase comes on the screen: "Please wait while Setup updates the configuration files.." (I believe that is the wording.) What could be causing this? I have seen this in the past after I made a Critical Update, etc. Any assistance/explanations would be appreciated. |

You will see that message when the wininit.ini file is being processed. After
updates or program installations, files which are in use while windows is running must sometimes be modified. The wininit.ini file is created to make those changes when the files are not in use, that is, during the boot process. If you did not install an update or program, it may also be created by your anti-virus app after it updates itself. Look in the Windows folder for a file named wininit.bak (which is what wininit.ini is renamed to after processing), and open it with Notepad. It will give you a clue as to what program is making the updates. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "MARY" wrote in message ... wininit.ini (now .bak) was created in this case to delete setup files used by Norton
Anti-Virus during its install, and also to delete a couple of nasty tracking cookies, which may have also been done by Norton. Next time you see the message on the boot screen, read the wininit.bak file again, and post back with what is in it then. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "MARY" wrote in message ... #1- Here is recent wininit.bak (Ad aware removed 4
cookies - did these cause the message at boot? #2- Also, what are the temp\GLB1A2B.exe files. They appeared last time also?) Are any of these causing the "Please wait while Setup updates configuration...etc.? #3- Also, you mention "and also to delete a couple of nasty tracking cookies, which may have also been done by Norton." What were the NASTY tracking cookies? Was it @edge.ru4.txt AND @smartmoney.txt? Thank you. Please wait while Setup updates...
The "please wait" message at boot occurs whenever there is a wininit.ini file being
executed...I don't think you are quite clear on understanding that yet. Various programs, updaters, or installers may add items to a wininit.ini file for execution during reboot. It is the execution of that file which causes the message you see. Probably Ad-Aware is creating the wininit.ini file in order to delete the cookies (yes, @edge.ru4.txt AND @smartmoney.txt were the cookies I referred to). The GLB1A2B.exe files may be related to a variant of CoolWebSearch on the system....there is some reference to it with "MySearchBar", which installs a sorts of advertising pop-ups and spyware, so you should check the system for such spyware and parasites. Here is my "standard" reply for such possibilities: Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan. Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds. Ad-Awa http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove the items in RED only. SpyBot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations: http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, double-click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar). Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums: http://forum.aumha.org/ http://forums.net-integration.net/ http://computercops.biz/forums.html http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=30 http://tomcoyote.org/forums/ http://www.lavasoftsupport.com http://boards.cexx.org/ The folks there will tell you what to remove. A tutorial for using Hijack This is located he http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ and an in-depth tutorial is he http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.htm Additional reading: Dealing with Hijackware http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://doxdesk.com/parasite/CoolWebSearch.html and http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "MARY" wrote in message ... #1- Here is recent wininit.bak (Ad aware removed 4 cookies - did these cause the message at boot? #2- Also, what are the temp\GLB1A2B.exe files.
