Plenty of them, but wait for the experts, please.

Do you have Norton System Works installed or more specifically System
Doctor?

Check your windows\inf folder (a hidden system folder and you will have to
enable the viewing of such files and folders in Explorer (Tools | Folder
Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide
protected operating system files") and look for large numbers of oem*.inf
files that are all 0 bytes in size. If you've got thousands of such files
this is the cause of your problem. Delete ONLY the 0 byte oem*.inf files.

Why has this happened? One possibility it that you have Norton's System
Doctor installed and forgot to disable System Doctor before updating your
system from the Windows Update site. If you don't delete these files some
software and most hardware and driver installs will take a very long time
to complete if they complete at all.

For more details see the Symantec site:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...15010309&src=n
and also MS KB 281967 - "Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup,
Installing Updates, or Adding New Hardware"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281967). I would strongly recommend
that you contact Microsoft and mention KB281967 and also KB301540 and ask
for a copy of the new ifsmgr.vxd v4.90.3003. You will then either be sent
the file or told how and where to download a copy. There should be no
charge for this call other than for the cost of the phone call.

Alternatively do yourself and your PC a big favour and dump System Doctor.

Mike I have macafee 2005 internet suite, I don't know if this computer has
had Norton installed because it was given to me, However I suspect it could
have had. Would I get the same problem with Macafee Privicy?

Cheers Dave

Dave,

Did you make the check I suggested? Do you have lots of 0 byte oem*.inf
files? If not then please ignore my post as it is irrelevant to the
problem you are experiencing.

Mike, the only oem files I could find were all oem system files with the
numbers 10,000 to 32,450 and another set oem 3246 to 9999
I left these alone.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway
Dave

Dave,

That really sounds as if you do have the problem I mentioned. Please
re-read my initial post. Do you, or do you no have lots of oem*.inf files
that are 0 bytes in size? If you do then that is the probable cause of
the problem. To have more than say ten numeric oem*.inf files is unusual,
to have over 29.000 as you appear to have is indicative of a major
problem.

Mike, I have just checked again, When I hold the curser over the icon the
info given is for examlpe "oem 17710 set up information size 0 bytes
attributes normal". I cannot find a file extension of oem*.inf anywhere. Hope
this helps

Cheers Dave

Dave
go back to Mike's original response - and use the instructions he gave there
*by the letter* .
You may also need to add the following into the instruction set....

In Folder Options, UNCHECK "Hide extensions of ..."

before proceeding further.
