I'm out...
I'm outta here.
I have shown you what I know about the patch and protecting yourselves. I have projects to get out and must concentrate on them at this time. Ultimately (in PCs as in life), your seurity is in your hands. Do your research. Listen to whom you trust. I wish you all the very best in this new year. Have fun and be safe. Jim |

You can stay, help, visit, etc... You can even ask questions too. Well, I don't think you have to leave? I'm out...
Thank you.
But, I'm afraid I do have to leave. I am working on a new self-help application and search page that I need to finish ASAP. I will probably look at these threads every once in a while, but it will have to something major for me to get involved with this thread again. Basically, some posters that disagree are confortable downplaying a threat that they have neither tested nor disected. They want to turn this into a shouting match - which it isn't. It basically comes down to a few simple facts. There is a new Windows exploit. It can affect all Windows PCs since Windows 3.0 (some by just surfing the web...others if they intentionally open an infected file). Microsoft is downplaying the severity of the problem. Anti-virus sites are NOT downplaying the severity of this exploit. There is an unofficial patch created by a concerned, talented, low-level programmer that will offer protection against this exploit until Microsoft issues it's patch.....in another 7 days or so. Now, it's up to users to do thier homework. Check with trusted news sources like CNN, CNET, SANS, F-Secure and many others. Search for "WMF". If you are comfortable with the patch (considering how many security professionals and organizations are suggesting that it be adopted as a short-term fix), install it. If not, unplug your XP-2003 computers until Microsoft issues a patch or take your chances. Whatever you are comfortable with... At this point, this exploit storm is getting stronger....not weaker. The problems will be the DDOS attacks, internet slow-down and increased SPAM resulting from unpatched machines (both before and after Microsoft issues thir patch) being used as bots by hackers exploiting this flaw. In any event, I didn't mean to be an alarmist....only to provide what information I had and let the users concerned about the WMF exploits take action to protect their machines. We do programming and small business network administration. Ater our own testing, have distributed the patch to all client workstations and PCs (XP-2003) as an extra level of protection against the WMF exploits in circulation. Whenl Microsoft's patch is available, we will untinstall the patch, create a restore point, install Microsoft's solution and cross our fingers. Good luck to you all. Jim "Galen" wrote in message ... But wasn't the point of your post to urge Win ME users to install a patch
that's only for NT-based systems? Perhaps you've mistaken the debate in xp.general for posts from here? Or did you post about the exploit in a different thread, here? Otherwise this thread reads - despite Galen's politeness - as leaning towards a petulance typically exhibited by one universally-despised troll or the sociopathic dishonesty of another. After all, Heirloom had already brought the subject up and there are plenty of us aware of it sufficiently that when there *is* a 9x version, it'll be posted of, here, for all to decide for themselves about, by any of a no. of regulars, including by the only one that responded to your original post in this thread. Or do you simply think that this exploit must be warned about as though by someone running through the streets shouting, in which case shouldn't you cross-post to *all* newsgroups? Or am I supposed to search - again - windowsme.general for your earlier thread, presumably posted under a different name, in order to appreciate why you appear to be leaving in a huff, possibly slamming the door on your way out? I have shown you what I know about the patch and protecting
yourselves. Much of which was and is irrelevant to those running Win Me or other Win 9x systems. I have projects to get out and must concentrate on them at this time. This would be a good time to do so. -- Mike Maltby Jim wrote: I'm outta here. I have shown you what I know about the patch and protecting yourselves. There are a no. of us here who've been trying to preach Safe Hex for years. Obviously it's a matter of opinion but I think you're wasting your time, they won't learn until they get infected. Meanwhile, like Mike, I'd like to know if you actually know of any 9x machines that have been infected. Obviously, if you do, we are two (of many) who do need to know (not least because we will spread the word) but also, as he says, you need to tell Microsoft. If you're implying that Mike is trolling by asking, then you need to step back - as he suggests - and calm down. ... Or do you simply think that this exploit must be warned about as though by someone running through the streets shouting, in which case shouldn't you cross-post to *all* newsgroups? No. I think the posted groups are sufficient to start the ball rolling. I don't think anyone using Win ME who's also using Win XP - and this group - is unaware of the issue and the only ones who might start spreading the word are the naive who, if anything, will panic (like the ones who unwittingly spread the hoaxes. Remember, that is undesirable also). Or am I supposed to search - again - windowsme.general for your earlier thread, presumably posted under a different name, in order to appreciate why you appear to be leaving in a huff, possibly slamming the door on your way out? Not leaving in a huff. Just too busy for trolls right now. I didn't see any, and that was basically my point. I see Tom V. also responded to the original post and I don't know why I
didn't see that one. But that is even less deserving - if that's possible - of dismissing as trolling. One point I didn't include before was that your posts are too detailed/technical to be understood by your apparent target audience. The two trolls I alluded to - that no sane person would want to be mistaken for - share an apparent conviction of being the foremost authority on matters of computer security whilst being quite plainly so ignorant as to be unable to see real experts all about them, or to even begin to appreciate their own limitations. Perhaps you do not over-estimate your own competence, but the jury's out as to whether you under-estimate that of the regulars here.
