Default VFAT error

I was getting a FVAT error in spurts for a while and couldn't figure out why. First of all, I would turn my computer on and when the Windows 98 screen came on, it just sat there with no hard drive activity. It would have stayed like that forever, I'm sure. I then tried to load Windows from the C:\WINDOWS in MS-DOS mode and that's when I saw the VFAT error (a device or resource was missing from VFAT and the system was halted). I deleted the text from my config.sys file and autoexec.bat file and that started it up again. Things are working fine now, but I don't want to speak too soon. In my config.sys file was the following line:

device=C:\WINDOWS\cwdinit.exe /A

The autoexec.bat file contained this text:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4
C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe

The C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe is the boot-up scanner for AVG Antivirus. I'm not sure what the SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 is. Does anyone know if I have done the right thing by removing the lines from the autoexec.bat file and config.sys file? Thanks in advance.

The lines you deleted were for DOS-mode support of your Crystal Audio
soundcard or sound chip on your motherboard. There's no harm in deleting
them.

This may solve your problem.
All that you will have to do is remove the /a switch.
{device=C:\WINDOWS\cwdinit.exe /A}
Check it out.

Okay then, just one more question. Do either one of you know why it would give me this error message spuratically? I mean, sometimes it would work, and sometimes not. To be quite honest, I thought it was the boot-up scanner (AVG). Thanks again.

I only found a possible solution. Try it. If it works forget it.
If the error returns then you will have to look at an other solution. Mind
you the error message may not be the same.

(If it's not broken don't fix principle)
