Default Win98SE Start Up Disk?

Hi:

I have a friend who currently can only boot in Safe Mode with Win98SE. Can
I create a Start Up Disk while in Safe Mode that would allow me to get a
good boot afterwards? Or is there any other way to get a good boot?

Everything was fine and yesterday when he tried to boot it would
not.Computer is a Gateway, but I do not have particulars at this time, other
than the OS is Win98SE.

Thanks

No. The bootdisk boots only to DOS.

When a computer can only boot in safe mode problably a driver is damaged
(or the hardware the driver is linked to).

You can findout which driver is the problem by using bootlog analyser
http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/bootloganalyzer123.html

Press F8 when the text 'Windows 98 is starting' appears. Choose the bootlog
option. When the system crashes reboot to safe mode. Use the analyser.

Default Win98SE Start Up Disk?

There is a branch entitled "Now that I've installed my program, Windows
98 starts only in Safe mode." at "START, Help, Contents,
Troubleshooting, Windows 98 Troubleshooters, DirectX section". (If you
encounter blank Help screens there, then...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q188867
Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems. This article contains a
link to what it says is the equivalent of the Windows Help
Troubleshooters...
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot
That's it.)

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q143283
W98 Defaults to Safe Mode
It says, delete "Wnbootng.sts", if you have it...

(1) START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab.
Bolt "Show all files" & UNcheck "Hide file extensions..."
(2) "START button, FIND, F/F, Wnbootng.sts". (Should be in C:\Windows.)
R-Clk it, & select "Delete"

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q306615
Always Starts in Safe Mode

Here is a way to edit MSDOS.sys. This is an important file.

(1) You won't even see it, unless "START, Settings, Folder Options, View
tab" is bolted "Show all files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file
extensions..." too.
(2) Find "C:\MSDOS.sys" and back it up. Call the backup MSDOS.bck, in
C:\.
(3) Then, R-Clk "C:\MSDOS.sys", Properties, and uncheck Read-Only.

(4) Open it in Notepad, delete the "BootSafe=1", or change it to "=0",
save it, & quit Notepad.

(5) Then, R-Clk MSDOS.sys again, and make it Read-Only. Reboot.
(6) Can't reboot? Then, in DOS, copy the backup over the one you've
mussed.
(a) ATTRIB -R -S -H C:\MSDOS.sys
(b) COPY C:\MSDOS.bck C:\MSDOS.sys
(c) ATTRIB +R +S +H C:\MSDOS.sys

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q118579/
Contents of the Windows Msdos.sys File

NOTE: If you have a "C:\Winboot.ini", it will override MSDOS.sys,
though. So, check for that too. It has the same format/instruction set
as the other.

Finally, the F5 key pressed at boot leads to Safe Mode. To see whether it is sticky, open Explorer, where F5 now means "Refresh". Does the screen constantly blink? (Well, I guess that would happen on the Desktop too.)

Default Win98SE Start Up Disk?

Hi:

Long story and apparently he has Registry problems which are prevalent in
all accessible Registry Restore points. Sometimes you can get a good boot,
while other times you cannot.

I tried to reinstall Win98SE in MS-DOS, but ran into hard drive scan
problems saying that I had to run ScanDisk etc. I had him run ScanDisk in
SafeMode last night prior to all this. I started the running of ScanDisk
again, but aborted due to time involved in running it.

I am trying to resolve whatever the Registry problems are, but like I said
I have no good restore points where I can access and restore. Also
apparently no easy way to reinstall Win98SE.

Any comments and/or suggestions at this point will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

If you are trying to install W98 over the existing system, you probably will
not solve the problem and may even cause more. If you are doing a clean
install and have no reason to run scandisk (you believe the hard drive is
sound), use this: setup.exe /is and this will bypass scandisk.

Have you tried the other troubleshooting methods the others recommended?

Default Win98SE Start Up Disk?

Hi:

Like I said sometimes now I can get a good boot and everything appears OK;
however the next boot might bring the desktop up and everything locks up. He
has NSW2005 and I ran Norton WinDoctor and in scanning the Registry portion
I got a big ERROR! and everything else in the scan was OK. Of course Norton
could not repair the Registry.

Again there are no good Restore Points that I can access to get an error
free Registry. So my basic problem is trying to restore a good Registry. I
thought maybe reinstalling over existing Win98SE might resolve this Registry
problem. He has a Win98SE CD. I also did find a StartUp Disk that he
apparently created in 2001.

Again thanks for any help.

Hopefully PCR will also see this posting, as he seems to be pretty sharp
in this area and especially MS-DOS.

The combination of SCANDISK problems and a failure to
reinstal Wiin98SE suggests the hard drive is unreliable.
If you cannot replace it, you must at least run SCANDISK
(or proprietary scan software of the HD maker) to completion.

If you assess the hard disk has software only errors, you
may try FORMATting the whole of C:
Then boot DOS from the correct floppy (free from www.bootdisk.com)
then reinstal Win98 via the CD's SETUP.EXE (assuming you have
a standard Win98SE OS, not a proprietorial "restore" CD.)

Something is obviously wrong; however, I have no faith in Norton. Have you
tried scanreg /fix /opt to see if that improves anything? I suspect it may
be something running in the background and not the registry. If it were the
registry, you should get the same result nearly every boot. See:
Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems

Installing W98 over itself does not create a new registry--you must do a
clean installation and then reinstall all software.
