Loss of contact - Mouse and Keyboard.
A bit of an oddball one.
(1) After a short time when (say) browsing a web page, the scroll function on the mouse stops working, however a left click in the area gets it back to work again. There is no problem with the pointer or clicks. (2) After opening a dos window, after a short time the window minimises all by itself. A left click on the minimised window will reopen it to where it was before it closed. (3) While typing in a window (ie - typing out this message in OE Express), the blue bar at the top goes grey, and the window stops accepting characters. A left click in the working space restores the blue bar, and typing proceeds as normal for a while. Overall the effect is like the active window closing all by itself, but none of the others become active in its place. Board is a ASUS CUSL2-C with a 733mH Pentium Win 98se Problem appeared after adding a sound blaster audio, a Gainward Geforce FX5200 (Nvida), a Samsung DVDwriter, and a PV-BT878P+ TV card. Although each component was added seperatley, and all drivers installed before going on to the next device, I didnt really notice the problem untill everything was installed. Although it is possible that the problem existed before I installed the TV, as I remember that there was some oddball behaviour when I went to register the DVD on the Samsung site. Any pointers?? Did you install any programming other than pure & simple drivers along =

Whoo Hoooo!
Thanks for insight Gary. There is a liveupdate programme (C:\Program Files\SAMSUNG\FW LiveUpdate\LiveUpdate.exe) associated with the Samsung dvd software that was installed amongst other Samsung stuff, along with the dvd drivers. This was periodically trying to contact its home site, and was being blocked by Norton because no rules had been set for it. However, for some reason the Norton warning screen was not being displayed, but became the active window anyway, therefore the window that I was using at the time became inactive untill I restored it with a left click in its space. I have disabled it in the startup list, and will have a play with it later. Getting close to midnight here - gotta go to work tomorrow Also I guess, I should find out why the Norton warning window was not displaying - but thats for tomorrow too - any ideas?. Thanks Ian F BTW - Sods Law holds true - after halving/quartering/eigthing/sixteenthing - the 'baddie' was one of the last two files to get tried. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... I don't diagnose problems involving Norton. My only recommendation in =
taht regard is to replace it with an AV and other apps that are less = intrusive into the guts of Windows. See my Security article, he "Security!" http://grystmill.com/articles/security.htm While you're at it, this article might help, also. It appears to me you are using NIS or NPF. You can open whichever app =
your using, click Statistics View Logs Content Blocking. Click on a = link in the upper window to view the details in the lower window. Then = and only then if you wish, you can click on Ad Blocking Configure in = the main window, click Advanced Add Site (if not already listed) and = then set the rules for the site. IMO I would leave well enough alone and = run the update manually whenever the itch to arises.=20 --=20 Brian A. Thanks Ian F Am suspecting two thngs causing your 3 problems. One is probably the video adapter driver for the mouse scroll problem. The remaining two problems are probably caused by an errant program attempting to start in the background without notifying you or asking your consent. This is not necessarily a virus, trojan etc. It may software that you loaded as part of a driver package, not the driver itself. |
