Computer Restarts By Itse
Alissa:
A Ok, I have another computer, that up until now, hasn't A given me any problems. But, when it was turned on today, A it's started to restart itself. No one's touched the A restart button. In fact, the restart button doesn't even A work. Does anyone have any info to help me fix the A problem, other than a complete reformat? The HD has a ton A of info that I can't replace and I don't want to lose it. A The "power on" button works fine. no problems. Pulling out A the HD and sticking it in a good computer's gonna be a A pain, but I'll see if that works. Any more advice will be A greatly welcomed! I haven't followed the thread so some of these questions and suggestions may be invalid for your situation but may help figure out the problem. When did the restart/reboot start? If when warm weather hit (or the room the computer is in) possibly the problem is thermal related. Perhaps the fan on the cpu isn't working properly, or a build-up of dust on the heat sink is impeding cooling. I also had a computer where the data cable to the hard drive was loose -- replacing the cable fixed that. It's also possible the fan in the power supply has failed, though seems like if there was a thermal cut-off in the power supply it would take longer than a second or two to reset. I did have a PSU with bad voltage regulation: there was around 9v on a lead that should have had with 5v or 12v; the symptom there was sometimes the computer refused to start up (no fans). ...I'm wondering if it is the power supply as the restart button connects to a circuit in the power supply. As for saving the data on your hard drive - definately! Save the "ton of info" some how: floppies, tape drives, to another computer, which ever way works for you. The "to another computer" can involve networking but can also be done with modems or cross-over cables. What you have at hand sort of determines what and how to do. Of course there is the problem of the system rebooting; if the system generally allows running for five minutes plan on short copying sessions to accomodate. You may have to copy individual subdirectories/folders rather than a directory with many subdir's. - ¯ barry.martinþATþthesafebbs.zeppole.com ® * I never wear a tinfoil hat: it keeps me from hearing the little voices. --- þ RoseReader 2.52á P003186 þ The Safe BBS þ Bettendorf, IA 563-359-1971 --- þ RIMEGate(tm)/RGXMod V1.13 at BBSWORLD * |
