Default Connecting directly to a Windows XP computer

Hello

I'm trying to connect my Windows XP computer directly to my Windows 98SE
laptop via a crossover cable. I do not have the internet, the purpose is to
share files.

Windows XP tells me the connection is either 'limited or unavailabe' after i
went through the network setup wizard. I've clicked the repair button but i
get a message saying that it cannot update my IP address?? I also get a
message at the end of the wizard stating if i would like to make a floppy
disk with the settings on, to put into the laptop, or if i want to use my XP
CD. The only problem is, my laptop doesn't have a CD or floppy attached at
present, hence why i wanted to connect them in the first place!

Is there a way to connect the two together without a using a CD or floppy
drive? I've tried to make the connection using Win98 but i'm completely lost
with that OS.

The Windows XP warning is unavoidable in that circumstance unless you
provide a fixed IP address, since XP cannot find a DHCP server. You can
find networking "how-to" guides at sites like http://www.wown.com/ and
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ that will tell you how to set up the XP
and 98 sides of the network.
