Default Replacement 98 CD-Own COA #

I recently purchased an HP Omnibook 6000 off ebay, when I received it I found
a pirated copy of Windows XP Home on the drive and a Win98SE COA Label on the
bottem of the machine.
HP has been no help in finding a replacment OS to use with my COA I was
hoping someone here could help me.

My end goal is to get a LEGAL copy of Windows XP Home (Upgrade) using my
98SE COA. If I buy XP Upgrade will I need the 98 software to install? ...or
just the COA?

If I need the software please direct me (on microsoft.com or hp.com) as to
where to find the replacment (without buying a whole new lisence).

If all I need is the COA I can easily pop out to a retailer and purchase
Upgrade ASAP.
Thank you

Your COA is probably for a HP OEM version of Windows 98, and would
probably ONLY work with the appropriate OEM CD from HP. If that COA was
for an earlier Microsoft OS, the COA would only work with that version
of HP OEM instalation media. Windows 98 COAs on HP computers would only
work with HP Windows 98 OEM CDs and MAY require a CD for that particular
computer model.

Many "name brand" computer manufacturers provide hidden recovery
partitions on the hard drive OR recovery CDs that delete ALL EXISTING
FILES and replace the drive contents to the state they were in when the
computer left the factory. Past the warranty period the availability of
recovery CD sets is subject to the manufacturer's policies.

Retail OS upgrades typicaly require an existing valid instalation of a
qualifying earlier Microsoft OS OR the installation media for the
qualifying earlier OS. The number from the earlier OS's COA is neither
required or usefull.

With a HP computer that was sold with Windows 98 you have TWO options:

1. Aquire the appropriate HP OEM Windows 98 instalation media or model
specific HP recovery CD set AND a retail Windows XP Home upgrade.

2. Aquire a retail FULL Windows XP Home and download model specific
device drivers from HP's web site.

Physical evidence of the installation software for 98 is required. This
includes 98 installed, or the 98 installation CD. A Certificate Of
Authenticity is not adequate. You will need the full version of XP in your
case, if it even works correctly on that system is another subject.
