There aren't too many things that I enjoy more than trying to solve a pc
problem, but I have spent days since Christmas (trying to) clean out a
friend's spyware/adware/toolbarware infested (note: not just infected, but
INFESTED) computer. I've used Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder, have manually
removed registry keys and values after researching help forums and
anti-adware forums, and rebooted and rebooted (in safe mode too). I've not
used the HiJackThis (yet), and I've just about used every resource available,
including my supply of supposedly inexhaustible patience for these kinds of
things.
I tell everyone who asks me for advice about whether or not to get a new
pc, and I tell them, the first thing is to get an A/V program and keep it
up-to-date, a firewall (even if you're on dialup) program, Ad-Aware, Spybot,
and don't download and install anything off the web until you read the EULA.

First, clean your computer of the malware. If you don't have a clean
computer, anything else you try probably won't work. Provide some details
about the problem. Virus scanner is current? What does it report? What
about other types of cleaners; AdAware, Spybot S&D, that sort of thing?

AdAware SE is running, I ask to remove, it does not. Not sure why on that.

55 PlugIns
1 Roing
7 HiJacks
15 MRUs
1 Other (Other has a TAC rating of 5)

SpyBot typ says nothing, likely because the definition is 6 mos
old..........?

HiJack This? CWShredder? But sometimes the computer is so mucked up that a
clean up will take more time than a clean reinstall. I normally consider
"reformat and reinstall" a drastic last ditch effort; it may be called for
if your computer is as badly compromised as seems to be the case.

ActiveX are programs that IE often uses to accomplish tasks like download
controllers and such; in fact I think ActiveX is used for WindowsUpdate.

Something happened last time I went on line to update my MS software, and
now I can no longer.

I followed a KB and it seemed to address Active X as the primary reason
why
I can no longer get my nec files.

However, the path it took me on, did nothing.

I know I have some virii or actually spyware and such, that I cannot kick.
And this might be the problem. But what does Active-X have to do with my
version of Internet Explorer, and why would that being corrupt disallow me
to visit my bank, or go into my-ebay, or read my e-mail from my work's
Intranet.

Anyone?

In IE Internet Options Advanced, you can turn off ActiveX.
