Defrag Utility Gets Hung Up

I cannot use my defragger. It doesn't get past the stage
where it checks
errors. Therefore I tried using the scan utility (which
scans for disk
errors). It gives me the message that it is slowed down
by a "program
writing" during the scan. It is so slow it never
finishes, and then never
starts the defrag operation!!! The message also says it
may be Windows doing
the writing. This never happened before. But I
deleted/Uninstalled a bunch
of stuff yesterday. This operation may have deleted or
changed something
that should have remained. For example, one program I
uninstalled, deleted
an important font in the process. Fortunately, I was
able to download a
replacement from the vendor's website. Can someone help
me here? Can I
reinstall the Defragger and/or Scan from Microsoft?
