Computer does not "see" printer
This is an interesting, mind-bending problem - the solution is not immediately
apparent. My computer is a custom-made unit, using an ASUS CUV4X-C motherboard. The OS is W98SE. It has a 800-megahertz Intel Pentium III processor, 384 MB RAM, and two hard drives (C: 20 gig; D: 40 gig) with all kinds of spare space. The parallel port mode in the BIOS is set for EPP - it uses 378H/IRQ7 by default. A Mustek 600 III EP Plus flatbed scanner __was__ connected to the parallel port, and a Canon BJC-4300 printer to the printer port on the scanner. Both the scanner and the printer worked just great. I bought a Hewlet-Packard "psc 1315 all-in-one", installed its software, and connected it to a USB2 port. The unit works like a charm. I removed the flatbed scanner (both physically and in software), and connected the Canon BJC-4300 printer directly to the parallel port. __Problem__: The Canon printer will not work - in fact, the computer does not "see" it. It shows exactly the same kind of error messages whether the cable is connected or not. I have removed the printer software from the computer, and re-installed it. I have removed the printer port (using the device manager) and re-installed it. The "device manager" tells me that the "device (ECP Printer Port on LPT1) is working properly". I have changed the parallel port mode to "ECP+EPP", to "ECP" and back to "EPP". I changed the IRQ from 7 to 5 and back again. I have tried the printer, using the same cable, on another computer using W98SE, __and it works__. Thinking back a few years, when this computer was new, I seem to recall there were issues then trying to get this printer to work with this computer. Beats me how it was resolved at that time. However, this time I made no changes other than installing the HP device and removing the Mustek scanner. (Interesting sidelight: I have an older Canon BJ-200ex monochrome printer. The computer does not "see" it either.) Anyone up to the challenge of suggesting a resolution this one? Any ideas are welcome! Thanks! John |

John The NIC usurps an address range, not just 360h, and that range includes 378h, discombobulating the printer. |

John I had one of those scanners...are you sure it was using an LPT port? mine worked from a SCSI card with SCSI2 (?) connector which looked like a printer port |

It shows exactly the same kind of error messages whether the cable is connected or not. John, I had a similar self generated problem of that nature recently. It sounds as if PlugNPlay hasn't had a chance to do it's thing. My solution was to unplug the data lines to the scanner and printer. Power down and backup, PNP should recognize NO such devices. Power down again, connect the scanner/printer data cables and power up. PNP should now recognize the new devices. I had to reinstall the HP scanner software, buy possibly didn't have to had I known what I was doing. This technique worked for me. Maybe I didn't have to Power down, but seems I remember that's a different uprocessor reset than a simple restart--maybe not. But you should power down when messing with the data lines at any rate. GOOD LUCK! Don I have removed the printer software from the computer, and re-installed it. I have removed the printer port (using the device manager) and re-installed it. The "device manager" tells me that the "device (ECP Printer Port on LPT1) is working properly". I have changed the parallel port mode to "ECP+EPP", to "ECP" and back to "EPP". The issue seems to be with the cpmputer (ASUS) not with W95SE. I've decided to simply dump the Canon printer - don't really need it anymore now that I have the HP PSC unit. Thanks again, guys! John |
