Temporary files

I had to do a system resore and reinstall ME, Office 2000
and a couple of other programs. My windows/temp file now
has 27 folders in it - mostly things like Word 8, whatever
that is. Is it okay to delete them? Also, I seem to
remember having done something a while back that
automatically emptied this folder upon shutting down the
computer. Does anyone know what that setting is?

You may delete the contents of your Temp file immediately after
rebooting, but not before. Simply go to
Start/Run (type) %temp%
Once the screen appears with all the files in the Temp folder, press
Ctrl and the A key to highlight the contents and then the Del key to
delete the contents.

If you are not already doing so, you should also get into the habit of
clearing your Temporary Internet Files (TIF). Simply
Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet Options
Select DELETE and put a checkmark in "delete all offline content"
