System Hangs

Any thoughts as to why system hangs when I "right" click a
file or folder in windows explorer or any icon on my
desktop.
I used to be able to right click these and
delete/copy/cut/paste but now it does not work and hangs
the system (98SE). I have to Ctrl Alt Del and restart.

Only strange thing that has happened recently is "my
documents" folder launched by itself while I was onlne
surfing internet. I got paranoid and disconected from
internet.
I scanned for viruses using PC-cillin 98 and found none.
Then ran "Spybot-search and destroy" and this showed
nothing either.
I have also re-installed over the top of existing 98SE.

I don't think you can get virus updates for PC-cillin 98,
so you must be running a virus scanner that's hopelessly
out of date.

Download the free AVG from http://www.grisoft.com/, update
it and scan the system.

I would run the "Repair system files" option under the
Repair tab of Microsoft's free unsupported TweakUI utility.

Enter: tweakui + "windows 98" - as is, in Google to find
the download page.

You could also try pressing the F8 key at startup before
Windows loads to bring up the Boot Menu, choose the
command prompt, and enter the command scanreg /restore.

Choose to restore a CAB file that predates the problem.

Have you also checked for a BHO? I believe SpyBot has a tool for that.
Also...

Better check for a BHO (Browser Helper Object), which attaches to
Explorer meaning to add functionality. However, poorly coded, they may
conflict with each other or Explorer.
