trouble installing PCMCIA Adapter
I've got a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop running Windows ME and I have =
trouble=20 getting a Level One WPC-0100 11Mbps Wireless PCMCIA Adapter (LAN) to=20 be recognised. I have successfully installed IEEE 802.11b WPC Utility according to step = 1-3=20 in the PCMCIA Card Installation Process leaflet that came with the card. = When I insert the card the little green light on the device comes on. In step 4 of the Installation Process it says "Operation System will = detect new=20 device and search driver automatically". But nothing seems to happen. When I select the "Eject and Unplug Hardware" Symbol from the toolbar at = the bottom of my screen it lists under Hardware devices only one = "unknown=20 device". At the bottom of the Unplug and Eject Hardware window it says=20 "Unknown device at Location 1 on Texas Instruments PCI-4451 CardBus=20 Controller (not as indicated in one of the screen grabs in the user's = manual=20 on page 17 in the Additional Note for Windows ME: "LevelOne 11Mbps=20 Wireless PCMCIA Adapter at Location 0 on 02Micro026812/6912 CardBus=20 Controller"). When I click on the desktop short-cut of the WPC Utility a little red = symbol=20 appears in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and if I click on it = the=20 warning message IEEE 802.11b PCMCIA card is not ready.=20 When I click on PC Card in the Control Panel it says "Socket 1: Empty" = and=20 "Socket 2: ". There's just an empty space where it should read = PCMCIA=20 Adapter. When I right click on My Computer and the properties I can't find a = Level=20 WPC-0100 11Mbps Wireless PCMCIA Adapter either. How do I remedy the situation? |

Mike M had this to say: Try reinstalling the drivers. The system is recognising the card but can't find the drivers for it. Check the Device Manager, does this give you any further clue as to the possible cause of the problem? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Along the same lines but a different direction. If the above does not work then you can try to remove remove the device from the port and remove all the drivers associated with it from the device manager. Then use the CD that came with your hardware and insert it. It should (I've a similar device I was playing with just this morning) auto-run and install. I ended up having to do this without the device in place and then selecting the device from the manufacturer's CD as it had multiple products on it. After that I plugged the device in and it worked like a champ. Might help or be another solution if Mike's doesn't do the trick for you. Galen -- "My mind rebels at stagnation. Try reinstalling the drivers. The system is recognising the card but=20
can't find the drivers for it. Check the Device Manager, does this = give=20 you any further clue as to the possible cause of the problem? I've re-installed the driver several times (different versions of it. I = think, I've=20 now got the latest one compatible to ME) to no avail. I'm going to describe what my Device Manager tells me, because I really=20 don't know how to interpret that information: There is: 1394 Bus Controller Texas Instruments OHCI compatible IEEE 1394 Host=20 Controller=20 and also: PCMCIA Socket PCMCIA Card Services Texas Instruments PCI-4451 CardBus Controller Texas Instruments PCI-4451 CardBus Controller Under Properties for PCMCIA Card Services it says: General: This device is ready device: PCMCIA Socket manufacturer: microsoft hardware version: not available Driver: Microsoft Date: 06/08/2000 Digital signature blablablabl However I can not get Driver Info for the PCMCIA Card Services. I can get driver info for the PCI-4451 CardBus Controller, which is a = list of=20 files all in C://windows/system CBSS.VXD... etc What does that mean? What am I looking for? What should it be saying? (Sorry, I'm really not all that good with computers...) |

But how do you mean "select the device from the manufacturer's CD"? I = open=20 the CD in Explorer and then what? (Sorry, again for being thick when it=20 comes to computers.) Sounds like something I haven't tried yet, though, = and=20 I am eager! |

Lydia had this to say: What does that mean? What am I looking for? What should it be saying? (Sorry, I'm really not all that good with computers...) From the looks of things it means that you have the drivers for the controller installed but not the drivers for the device unless I'm missing something. You need a) controller drivers so that the card put in the system can be ready by the hardware and b) device drivers so that you can use the device through the afore mentioned controller. It looks like you have step 1 complete. You may also wish to check with your laptops OEM for updated drivers. Galen -- "My mind rebels at stagnation. Whilst you're browsing the CD look a 'setup.exe' or the like.
Oh, yes, but that's how I installed the device driver. Put CD in, open it, find setup.exe, let the install wizzard take over. Done all that, it was all fine, there's an icon for it on my desktop. So as far as i can tell all the drivers are there but somewhere along = the line=20 they are not communicating. Like the Sherlock Holmes quote by the way. |

Original Equipment Manufacturer! I'm learning so much. So is that Dell for a Dell Inspiron 8000 or someone else altogether? (tell me if I'm wasting your time and I'll go away.) Lydia |

So is that Dell for a Dell Inspiron 8000 or someone else altogether? (tell me if I'm wasting your time and I'll go away.) Lydia My time is here for you to waste. No worries. In this case I'd check with Dell's Notebook support for updated drivers for the PCMCIA adapter. I'd check, also, to make sure that you have purchased a compatable product. Is the device compatable with the 2.1 standard? Is your PC Card slot capable of using the card (i.e. does it too support the 2.1 standard? I'm pretty sure it does but it's just another question to add to this.) Another option is to simply remove all of the device drivers associated with this, boot to safe mode, and try installing them from in there. After that you'd insert the card and reboot. That should, I'd hope, work assuming your drivers are compatable with ME. Does the device specifically state that it's Windows ME compatable? If not then they may not have drivers for it that will work with the OS though you can often find drivers that have worked for other people at driverguide.com (registration required) and there's a forum there where you can ask for assistance. The last time I was there the had a new "beta" chat that you could use as well. Again, my time is here for you to 'waste' though it's not a waste from my perspective. I enjoy doing what I do.
