Default windows 98 upgrade from 95 not working

i have a 133 pentium w/ 78 mb ram and a 10 gig harddrive. i upgraded by
uninstalling my windows 95 and reformated my harddrive and installed my
windows 98 when i but in my license number i recieved a error message that it
was not right so i called 1800 ru legit they gave me a new license #. now my
computer does not load up windows. i only have dos mode from the f1 prompt
to start. if i let it load up on its own it freezes at the windows 98 welcome
screen. i tried to reinstall windows 98 with a different 98 disk and its
license number but my machine would not accept the reinstall. could the code
that microsoft gave have froven my machine? all my hard drive and a drive are
stuck in dos mode. i can get to windows in safe mode but cant install
anything as safe mode doesnt recognise my cdrom drive. please help.

If it was an inappropriate key, Win98 would have rejected it and you would
not have been able to get any further in the installation process. There is
something else going on or the installation became corrupted between the
time it originally rejected the initial key and the time you entered the new
one from MS. You might want to reformat and start the installation again
fresh from the beginning.

Since it loads in safe mode, you have something (a driver or program for
example) that starts in normal mode that is causing the problem. Have you
installed any of the drivers (video for example) yet?
