installation, java problems, and still unable to download from v4update
Okay Noel, I can't let this one pass, but your next answer makes this
somewhat unimportant. In case your interested, your absolutely wrong with your comment. All OSs (Win98, Millennium, NT at least) installed the same files.. as those are the only files that were available for installation with IE 6. So rather than attempting to defend an indefensible position, which you have, perhaps it might be advisable to actually "look before you leap" so to speak.. those files came from the \Windows Update Setup - folder save I made directly upon the original installation. Those are from the cab files, there are no other versions available within them... Not so uniquely, the installation files were immediately removed, automatically.... in fact, wasn't it that installation created everyone's VCM.??? Moreover, IE DID install those files, ask any one who has bothered to check their installations.. If you have 98 get a tracing/debug program and TEST your system, rather than spouting some drivel which you may believe, but may be unsupportable. I have check several of my "customers" computers and found these same files. As for information, I gave you, or rather the group, all pertinent information. Perhaps you should clean your glasses or get some. The comprehension level is grade 10. As for supposed diatribe, the last one who made that comment no longer sits the bench,, so perhaps you might rethink your position.. I do not take defamation or derogatory comments lightly. Either grow up or find someone else to flame. Your 2002-2006 MVP status does not impress me whatsoever, my first MS OS was DOS 3.3 and it was NEW. Were you even born yet? Sorry get carried away sometimes.. "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... I am now at a total loss as to exactly what you are trying to achieve! The IE6 installer will NOT install incorrect file versions on your PC - it's designed to pick the versions it needs from the CAB files and install them. If you have somehow managed to set up your system in some manner to spoof the OS then that is very definitely your problem, and not the OS's - however, it's also irrelevant, as what I was hoping to get from you was some meaningful information, rather than a confused diatribe. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "MEB" meb@not wrote in message ... Well, I must say you are persistent, the question you asked: " I'm at a loss to understand why any Win9x system should be calling uxtheme - this file is peculiar to Windows XP AFAIK! Have you by any chance installed in incorrect version of some program?" As ANYONE, on ANY system which does NOT protect against installation of "wrong" system files,; who installed IE 6 SP1, installed these files. Shwapi.dll is used by most if not ALL Windows programs, AND IE, Explorer, and dozens of other Windows and Windows based programs use and/or call these files, as are these other XP files; AND these files do call for these missing dlls, and missing functions; THEN, the installation of these XP files, which was done in any OS which installed IE 6, are calling for non-existent functions and non-existent dlls, THEREFORE, if you had followed the previous postings, you would have noticed, that a style of debug program had been used to detect these errors, and TRACE the problem to its root cause. Moreover, per Microsoft own certification standards, these files can NOT and could not be installed in any OS except XP, as they are unverified and un-certifiable for installation. Why? Because they cause errors. They are NOT compatible. |

Thanks Franc, I will get them from there and let the group know if they
helped. "stay on available" if you would. From the looks of it on Google newsgroups, I may have some difficulties with these, and need some help trying to fix the new problems. I apparently need a direct address for 816093 as well. Strangely I don't seem to have that old update file saved here locally... I swear my system is becoming so screwed up with all these supposed fixes and workarounds, it IS getting worse. Such as, how the heck in all these installs, uninstalls, re-installs, re-regs, reg tweaks, and the rest, did this OLD file manage to make it back into my system... and what else has???? installation, java problems, and still unable to download from v4update
NEW ISSUES!!
Anyone else getting the impression that Microsoft has used our Win98 and Millennium OSs as test beds for the XP virtual environment for 98, or perhaps their new OS? ISSUE 4 Attempting to do my semi-monthly court and web cd burn (last- end of October/beginning November, skipped December's), I find that my Nero 5.5 now creates unreadable worthless cdroms. I note (from newsgroups and other web pages) that there were/are various problems associated with certain installations/updates from Microsoft regarding Nero, however, I'm a little tired of constantly back searching through newsgroup listings and Microsoft fixes to find the supposed fixes/workarounds.. no it's not a hardware problem.. Soooooo someone care to direct me to the ACTUAL fix.. before I fall off this razor edge; on the wrong side... I am getting extremely upset with this Microsoft trashed system... ISSUE 5 I would also like to be directed, if possible, to the PERMANENT FIXES for the IE loss of use of the tools such as "find on this page", "save web page as", ..., and the rest of the IE interference with previous normal use... a list with fixes would be extremely convenient, something more concise than Microsoft's please (if you go through their KB and troubleshootings you'll note several different supposed fixes scattered about).. without the "find on this page", the websites and newsgroups that do address listings of fixes can take several hours of study to find the desired info.. I realize this is becoming a lot to ask, but I really don't have the time to compile all these answers myself.. and this is an attempt to do so here.. OLD ISSUE 3 Anyone tried the dll fixes/attempted fixes suggested? Reason? Having now downloaded the KB905915-Windows-98-ME-x86 "fix" with versions: Shlwapi.dll 6.00.2800.1740 (xpsp2.050831-1533), Shdocvw.dll 6.00.2800.1762 (xpsp2.051021-1312), I see they still call for the same missing dlls and cause missing function calls. No I haven't installed it. It would appear that fixing present problems first would be advisable, unless this IS the supposed fix for most of these problems, such as mine. Judging by the newsgroups and websites, there are considerable problems associated with this installation. Is this the supposed fixes?. "MEB" meb@not wrote in message ... Ah, those fateful December "Frixes" (not misspelled) which caused all these problems throughout the Microsoft domain... The last "starting" is from trying to download 816093 from the catalog. Just the normal stuff until the dang DO YOU ACCEPT screen, (duh, "no I just came here for my health and to look at all the pretty pictures") press the accept and nothing... note the above serves absolutely no purpose as it has nothing of real interest or help, but now THAT is out of the way. Just finished the 905915 download, but...... gees do I really want to install it??? Thanks though for the file, safely in my upgrades folder now anyway.. while I continue to collect the supposed fixes for that installation... "mae" wrote in message ... put finger to keyboard and composed: Okay Franc, already had the one from tripod, the KB905915 file is not there. Did a search for it on Google, found mostly the warnings, and supposed downloads for 98 in Russia, and several other foreign nations such as Japan. However, the language, or language barrier, may not serve the purpose here.. Running 98? And how did your installation go? I'm prevented from taking advantage of the automatic security updates because MS insists that I use an insecure browser (IE) for Internet access. I either search for direct links, or I use unofficial patches, some of which purport to address deficiencies in the official ones. As for KB905915, I don't have it and AFAICS I won't need it because I don't use IE when I'm on the Net. "MEB" meb@not wrote in message ... installation, java problems, and still unable to download from v4update
Well, I can certainly relate to that.
Were it not for the necessity of IE for updates [though that doesn't now work on this machine] I would likely still be using Opera like I used to, for everything.. though I do occasionally use Firefox. And yes, I also used to search for "off channel" files for Microsoft and supposed fixes. But since the last re-install I tried to stay within Microsoft "certified" files, fixes, re-regs, and the like.. lot of good that did me. I'd trade a virus for the problems I now have, anyday, at least that can be easily fixed without much problem.. "Franc Zabkar" wrote in message ... installation, java problems, and still unable to download from v4update
Answering my own ISSUE 3 raising possibility of installation of missing DLLs
