No connection to the internet suddenly
I have a friend's computer here trying to figure out what happened to
his Win98 SE computer. He has satallite internet and he was suddenly unable to make a connection. Replaced the nic on the chance that was the problem. Didn't help. Ran virus checkers, SpyBot, AdAware, etc. and could find nothing wrong. I decided to try to connect through his modem using a Juno free connection. No dice. I got messages from the phone company telling me I was dialing the wrong number, that I needed to dial a 1 first, etc. I tried the exact same account on my laptop and connected immediately. Finally decided to try installing my USB DSL modem on his computer. Installed like a charm and connected right away to my provider. However, I couldn't get on the internet through Internet Explorer. I tried to ping from a DOS prompt and nothing could be found. I know his network card is working because I plugged it into my network and was able to copy new virus definitions across the network. Does anyone have any ideas here? It doesn't seem like the hardware has failed, but I can't get to the internet by any means. The rest of the computer seems to be working just fine. I can open all the programs and work normally. It's just the connection to the internet. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help. ben |

I'm using the same phone cable with both computers. There's no
firewall installed on my friend's computer. I finally downloaded the BIOS from HP so I could flash the BIOS chip in the event some trojan had wormed its way into there. At first, I couldn't even get the computer to recognize the floppy drive. So, I used the jumper on the motherboard to force a reset of the BIOS. I finally got the floppy to read a diskette and was able to boot into DOS in order to do the flash. All appeared to go well but it was still a no-go on connecting to the internet. So, I've tried to connect via the network card, the PCI modem, and my own USB DSL modem. I could connect with my DSL but couldn't ping anything. I've never seen anything quite like this. The computer seems to work perfectly until I try to get on the internet. All paths seemed to be blocked. I uninstalled and reinstalled the modem software but with no change. ben On Sun, 29 Aug 2004 17:59:52 -0700, "Gabriele Hauschild" wrote: Hello Ben, Is it possible there is a fir_ewall that is blocking the connection? Just by chance does he have a firewall that might be blocking =
something? Did the firewall ask for permission of an app which he denied = access to the internet? Has he possibly blocked "MS generic host process = for Win32 services" which AFAIK is needed to access the internet?=20 --=20 Brian A.
