Windows 98 updates
My old PC (which cannot be upgraded beyond Windows 98 due to its limited specs) has Windows 98 and I
want to clear down the entire disk and reinstall Windows 98. However, when I try to perform a Windows 98 Update the Microsoft website says it is no longer available or cannot respond (I can't remember the exact message, I'm on another machine at the moment). The last time I did a complete reinstall of Windows 98 was in 2009 and Windows Update worked okay then. I thought that it was still possible to perform a Windows Update to apply all the cumulative historical Windows 98 patches - has this facility now been retired? |

It's long gone, but if you try on Google you will likely find collections of W9X and also WXP patches and fixes and updates of all possible types. Grab them all. People are headed toward tablets to the point where desktop machines may become rare and expensive. If you want support for an old machine, get it and save it, you might soon be dependent on your own stores. |

My old PC (which cannot be upgraded beyond Windows 98 due to its limited specs) has Windows 98 There are many used IBM desktop computers with 3.2 ghz P4 cpu's, 512 mb ram and 80 gb hard drives that came off-lease that are being sold in discount electronics and surplus stores for about $100 (with new mouse and keyboard). They come with Windows XP pre-installed. The last time I did a complete reinstall of Windows 98 was in 2009 and Windows Update worked okay then. I thought that it was still possible to perform a Windows Update to apply all the cumulative historical Windows 98 patches - has this facility now been retired? Microsoft made a change to their update site that broke windows 98. I highly suggest that if you don't already have it, that you obtain and install Windows 98(se) *second edition* (not First Edition aka Standard Edition). It's easily available on torrents. http://dl5.torrentreactor.net/downlo...+CD+%2B+CD+Key If you don't have a windows 98se product key, try one of these: VFJMK - P9XMW - 4KYXP - RVV89 - Q7J3J FXJGV - V47K8 - 9TKJ3 - 4UVBT - CTCFW TJKTG - TFVPY - YK87C - 8TJVV - BKRFV HH872 - 6RM2K - FPPWV - V9HDB - BK708 FVV68 - CP77T - 3VFBV - J39XB - PBKHB VYPK3 - 6V2M9 - XM76K - HJ7P9 - 3BMBJ QQBV8 - GCGMC - 7CHW3 - 3F7MF - TC878 You will find all of the microsoft update (and much more) he http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php I also highly suggest you install KernelEx: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/ There is a version of windows 98(se) with many updates and patches built-in that's available on torrents: Window98.ubcd.feb2008.Ajeetgagan.torrent http://www.torrentcrazy.com/download...tgagan.torrent |

Google for win98 sp3(unofficial). worked fine for me, and contains all(most) of the updates. |

[Though I'd go for 1G RAM; I find my use of XPSP3 is usually using more than 512M (though less than 3/4 G, so that might do). There are people who find 512 enough, though.] [] Microsoft made a change to their update site that broke windows 98. Interesting. It contains drivers for much hardware that has appeared since 98SE, some patches, and much else that it shouldn't (-:! -- J. P. Gilliver. I've bought a few such computers (for certain family members) and replaced their 40 or 80 gb IDE drives and CD-rom drives with 500 gb SATA and DVD-RW drives (yes - those computers have unused SATA connectors on their motherboards. And I've installed XP-sp3 (system builder version) on them. But I bring up these cheap (yet some-what modern) computers as an option for those still running 98 on pathetically old hardware, with the intent that they wipe the hard drive and install win-98 on them. Because (as I've said countless times) there's no reason why people have to keep using 10-year-old computers to run win-98 when they can get a 5-year-old computer for about $100. The IBM computers in question date from a time-frame where most or all of the system's hardware components have win-98 drivers available (on the net if you search for them). |
