How did your reinstall ME? - over itself, or 'clean'??
Did you have IE6 installed before the reinstall (if you reinstall OTT)??

I had to do a complete reinstall from scratch, with the
help of Dell of course! I just checked and found that I
have IE 5.50. I am sorry to say that I don't know what
OTT is; but am hoping you will be able to help! Thanks,
Kathy

OK - so you reset the system to 'factory fresh'? (OTT = 'Over The Top')

Can you use the web normally? - at exactly what point in Windows Update does
it freeze?
1) as you enter the site?
2) as it refreshes the update engine?
3) as it starts the scan for updates?
4) as you start the download?

Check your Security settings in Internet Properties - set them to
Default/Medium for the Internet Zone, and try again

Just thought I would let you know that I had found the
solution to my problem! I read a post from Mike M. and it
contained the answers I needed. Thanks again, and keep up
the great job :-)

Noel, It seems from the fix that I got, that I had too
many OEM *.inf files and had to delete all the ones with 0
bytes. You are wonderful, and I appreciate the prompt
responses to my questions. Thanks again, Kathy

Or better totally remove all Symantec crippleware and set your PC free.
