Default Verizon DSL and Windows 98se

Hi Everyone,

Many thanks for your responses to:

98 Guy
John Dulak
Lostgallifregan
J. P. Gilliver (John)
Philo
etc.

One very important detail I forgot to mention. I do not want to use this
DSL modem as a router, or any router, or involve any type of wireless
connection.

When all is done (after "activation"), I want to use one Win98 computer
connected via CAT5 cable to the DSL modem.

If the software I am suppose to download will allow me to deactivate
those other "features", such as wireless router, then I will have to download
it.

That ought to be the simplest possible config. It's likely the modem uses
DHCP, so try setting the computer to do that too. (It's the default anyway).

If the DHCP server in the modem works, you'll get all your DNS and gateway
and netmask set up for you. Look at the Network part of the Control Panel to
see if this is working.

If it is, try using a browser to reach 192.168.1.1 (unless your provider
tells you a different address, specifically to reach the modem). You will
likely find all the configuration tools it has that way, as a web site
inbuilt to the modem. It's unlikely you'll need any software on your machine
other than an OS and a standard browser to do this. (Unless Verizon are being
perverse, that is, most stuff DOES use this method...)

PS. Once you're in, disable wireless completely if you don't intend to use
it. It keeps RF emissions down, and is the best way to prevent any kind of
wireless-related attack.
