Default Verizon DSL and Windows 98se

Hi 98 Guy,

The following is from their manual that came with their DSL modem, etc.

"Activation & Registration" step 5

5. "Download the software to manage your high speed Internet connections.
This software is needed to complete the activation of your Verizon Internet.
Other optional software downloads may also be available."

Note: My DSL service is scheduled for Nov 4.

What I can do, instead of downloading that software, try to use the DSL
service (get email and visit a web site) on that date. If that fails, then
perform step 5.

John

Hi 98 Guy, and others,

I have a WinXP computer and will use that to download the software
and "activate", which I assume I can do via the DSL modem?

If you have a working internet connection via your DSL modem, then I
honestly can't see what more needs validation, hence your question about
downloading this software to activate your DSL service makes absolutely
no sense.

Please - can you provide any details at all about what software Verizon
wants you to download or activate?

Be warned that anything they want you to download and activate is almost
certainly optional for your DSL service, and is quite likely to be an
additional feature along the lines of an internet security package that
they may very well charge you for on a monthly basis which I can assure
you that you absolutely do not need.

I'm surprised that it's going to take so long. DSL service can normally
be activated on any line within a week, usually more like 2 or 3 days.

the DSL service (get email and visit a web site) on that date.

Verizon has something called a "Walled Garden".

In the self install kit, one of the instructions involves running the
software provided on a CD. If you don't use it, and you just plug your
modem in, get a connection and ignore the CD, you will get stuck at the
Walled Garden that will basically do what the CD does; take you through
the account activation process and configure the modem, and then give
you the option to install optional Verizon software.

In most of Verizon's areas, you can technically use any PPPoE Username
and Password combination to log in. You can often times run on the
default "newdsl" user profile, though some people have reported some
small issues with it in the past. The only thing you really need to do
is log into the modem once you get it hooked up, change the password,
and then disable the Walled Garden. From there you can set up the
modem, and all of this can be done from anything that has a web browser
and can use an Ethernet connection (Wireless works, but it's bad
practice to change settings on Wireless).

The walled garden can be disabled by accessing this page in your modem:

http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm

This is the login page for the internal auto registration. If a page
loads up saying RESTRICTED, you'll have a button in the middle if it
says DISABLE - click it. If it says enable, -don't touch it - and
close browser, that means its already turned off.

All Westell and ActionTec modems that are being shipped to customers now
have a factory setting ENABLED by default known as Walled Garden.
Walled Garden causes a no route situation (unable to connect to the
internet or surf) within the modem in order to force registration via
the Web Based Activation site. In order for you to route (or connect to
the internet or surf) with these modems, Walled Garden must be turned
off or disabled. For new customers this can be accomplished by
completing the WBA activation website.

For Westell 6100F, Westell 6100, Westell Versalink 327W, and Westell
7500, simply visit this page:

http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm

and enter the modem's username and password (default modem user
name=admin and password=password). Click DISABLE and, and personalized
your modem?s user settings. It is advisable that you change the
password to admin. Turn OFF your modem for 30 seconds, then turn back
on. You should now be able to route (connect to internet) after walled
Garden is OFF.

One more note: If your modem has "Frontier Westell 7500" printed on it,
then you must visit this page to turn off the walled garden:

http://192.168.1.1/frontier/redirect.htm

Something else:

Do enable WPA encryption on the Westell VersaLink 7500 router, but do
not do so without disabling WEP encryption first. The two settings are
mutually exclusive, but some router bug will cause authentication errors
and failed connection attempts if WEP and WPA are enabled at the same
time.

The Westell 7500 router is a bit picky about allowing you access to the
"Advanced" panel, which allows you to configure DNS, VPN, uPNP and the
DHCP server. Just use this link to get the
