Hello Heather:
Knowing that you are an advocate of EZArmor, I would like your opinion on whether to go back to EZAntivirus and EZFirewall, which I had lost and now retrieved the exe. files, or keep the AVG Antivirus and Sygate Firewall, which were installed for immediate protection. EZArmor requires uninstalling any other Antivirus Software, before using it. I must say that I like AVG & Sygate quite a lot. What's the verdict? Harry, old and would prefer it both ways. |

Hi Harry......
Yes, I like EZ Trust. I have used it (and the freebie InoculateIT PE version before) for at least 6 years at a guess. I had Norton 3 and went to that after getting 4 viruses because Norton was defective!! I can't tell you whether AVG & Sygate are better.....it is your choice. One thing in EZ Trust's favour tho, is that it updates every day.....AVG does not!! But if you practice *safe hex*, it matters not what you use. I can't remember the last time my AV went off......I have OE tweaked enough and an ISP that grabs viruses and spam, so that it rarely gets used. So in essence, it is your choice. If you like them, then keep them. If you prefer an AV that updates more often, then go for EZ Trust. Guess that didn't answer your question, did it (G). Heather.... "webster72n" wrote in message ... Hey Figgs! (and Harry),
While last year I spent some time on acv/acav defending AGV during it's period of overloaded update servers (because you can still - easily - update defs manually), I'm a bit fed up with it now that it's happening again. I'm seriously considering going EZ Trust or (more likely) Kaspersky. I haven't searched the Grisoft ftp yet, but via http there seems no way to get *program* updates for AVG (as opposed to defs) other than via the program itself, which at the moment times out repeatedly. I've always considered that EZ Trust is better than AVG, but that AVG is enough if coupled with common sense, ie Safe Hex (and that no AV is enough without common sense!). I've stopped using Kerio 2.1.5 because it is so old. There are occasions when it's config file gets deleted for no apparent reason. I don't consider Zone Alarm a contender and so it's a toss up between Kerio and Sygate Personal Firewalls. Sygate Personal Firewall seems unable to install if *all* traces of the previous firewall are not first removed, although it installs to a clean-installed Win 9x without problems. I had used previous builds of Sygate PF, but stopped a year or so ago because it would occasionally crash (not something I want my firewall doing!). However, the current build seems to run (in 9x) OK. The current build does, however, appear to use WMI, which running from early in the boot process, interferes with ScanDefrag (and Scandisk generally) unless Sygate is closed first (and WMI stopped). This is a minor issue, of course, but an annoyance. However, the latest build of Kerio PF does not have installation issues or bugs that I'm presently aware of (I'm running it in XP). ATM I recommend Kerio 4.1.2 www.kerio.com/kpf. Shane "Heather" wrote in message ... Hi Harry...... Yes, I like EZ Trust. If it didn't, it sure gave me a better insight, Heather. For all I can tell, AVG updates daily right now, at least for the last three to four days or so. It really does a nice job. The thing that makes it so hard for me to decide is, that I paid 40 $'s for EZArmor and hate to see it wasted. Is it really so important not to have a second Antivirus besides EZ, or would it actually tolerate it? Personally I don't see why not. I know very well, the choice is mine, in the end. Harry. Hi Harry.....
Shane's post added a lot of sense as well. The most important thing to do is practice *safe hex*......which really means common sense. No opening attachments from Aunt Maude without checking first, staying off unsafe websites, keeping all patches up to date on IE, and so on. I have a lot of things that I use over and above an AV and a firewall that make OE/IE safer. NOW....DO NOT put a second on-access scanner on your computer!! I have a second one on here, but it is the *manual* F-Prot for DOS.....it is free and I have used it longer than EZ Trust. It is my backup AV. I run it every month or two. It sometimes catches stuff that other AV's do not. But it does NOT run in the background....along with EZ Trust. I have to activate it myself to do a scan. I want you to understand the difference between manual and on-access scanners. Whew....I know I am being very firm!! But it is also very important that you do not do what you are thinking!! The analogy I like to use is.....picture two basketball players going for a jump ball......they crash into each other and guess what.....they miss the ball!! That is what will happen with two on access scanners.....they will both try to grab a virus and quite probably miss it. Comprendez? And I commend you for coming here FIRST and asking whether you should do something or not (sort of, grin)......I just saw where you were heading. Never, ever be afraid to ask about anything.....here is where you get your answers. Cheers....Heather (and I don't really bite......just growl a bit, grin) "webster72n" wrote in message ... Thank both, you Heather and Shane. I found out about Sygate's interference with Scandisk. I may eventually go back to EZAntivirus and EZFirewall. In the meantime AVG just caught a trojan for me today. It was hiding on one of my Zip Disks. Was I glad. What a 'good thing' to be here. Harry. "Heather" wrote in message ... Hi Harry..... Here is where you can find out what is really happening with AV tools:
The Virus Bulletin http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/ ICSA Labs - TrueSecure Corp. http://www.icsalabs.com/html/communi...products.shtml AV-Test http://www.av-test.org/ Several of my knowledgeable MVP colleagues use, and recommend, AVG, but I would never do so, despite its low cost (it's free). It has scored relatively poorly, IMO, for a long time. Since you already own eTrust Armor, I urge you to migrate to its AV tool, no mattter which personal firewall you choose. The eTrust AV has a small footprint, is fast, updates easily and quickly and often, and is highly rated. The CA eTrust version of the firewall is a rebranded version of the free Zone Alarm, so you have a huge user community on whom to depend, if necessary. If costs were no object, I would probably choose NOD32 as the AV tool: http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm based on the ratings from the above organizations, and from one of my MVP colleagues, who is very happy with it. I have no personal experience with it, nor any other reports about it from friends. HTH, -- Jack E.
