diagnostic programs?
I have had my HP with ME for a couple years. It has been
acting up. It will suddenly go back to the HP INVENT screen for no apparent reason. Also the screen will freeze occasionally and I have to reboot. I am thinking maybe the drivers are starting to corrupt? Is there a diagnostic program I can download that checks this and other problems that might be causing the problems. I have had zippo luck with HP eventhough I paid for an extra 3 years warranty. |

Thanks for the info - I will certainly try all this. How
about Norton System Works? Is it worth the $$$? Ronda -----Original Message----- On Wed, 22 Sep 2004 22:54:18 -0700, I have had my HP with ME for a couple years. It has been acting up. I think most people here will counsel against installing anything by
Symantec-Norton, especially the NSWorks package, when all you probably need is its anti-virus feature. My subscription to NSW 2004 was about to expire so I ventured to try Zone Alarm Security Suite (yeah, I know, it's a package of things) which offers anti-virus and all the other goodies Zone Alarm is known for. No problems whatever so far, and it lives with ME without complaining, and with much less running in the background. Ken Bland "ronda" wrote in message ... Thanks for the info - I will certainly try all this. How about Norton System Works? Is it worth the $$$? I haven't thought so, no. You want diagnostics that: - are safe to use, i.e. don't require the OS to work - don't run underfoot and change the way the OS works Norton Utilities: - runs within Windows - duplicates standard Windows functionalities - runs underfoot and changes the way the OS works So it's not "diagnostics" as I consider these, and IMO the value it adds is insufficient to be worth the stability/compatibility impact, so even if it were free, I'd pass it up. In fact, that's exactly what I've done. I've twice bought Norton Utilities to get the DOS diskette Diskedit and Unerase tools, which I've found invaluable for FATxx (they are useless in NTFS), and I've never taken the CD out of shrink-wrap. If System Works also includes Norton av and firewall, then the result is much the same - I'd rather use free alternatives. Norton av may be worth paying for if it works as a bootable CD to formally scan and clean NTFS, but it adds commercial malware (DRM) in installed to HD. --------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - Tech Support: The guys who follow the 'Parade of New Products' with a shovel. --------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - |

NAV also doesn't work with ME (except under certain poorly-defined
circumstances) - as hundreds (if not thousands) of posters to these forums will testify! -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "cquirke (MVP Win9x)" wrote in message ...
