Default Programs running in background.

All user application programs are shut down. Then, when I do Ctrl+Alt+Del
the "Close Program" window pops up. There are 22 programs on it's list. I
have found instructions to load 17 of them under the Msconfig startup tab.
Where are the instructions to load the other 5 located? Do I really need all
22 of these programs running in the background? Which, if any, can I get rid
of?

Immediately after boot up, the memory tracking program "Cacheman.exe"
reveals that a whopping 152 MB of my 192 MB of RAM is already in use. Are
the 22 programs above using most / all of the 152 MB in use? If not, what
else could be using so much?

It would help if you included a list of
"22 programs on its list"
since very few of the psychics are in over christmas

humor ?

First, disable cacheman.exe. Uninstall it. To see what is running and who it
is run Dr. Watson and look at the "Tasks" and "Startup" tabs. I feel you
will find cacheman.exe is the memory hog. You should be able to decipher who
is who in Dr. Watson. Then explore the run key in the registry. If you don't
feel safe after you go there then run Adaware with the "VX2" plug-in,
Spy-Bot, and then pay a visit to http://www.doxdesk.com/ and go the
parasites tab. I go this far with you because you ask what could be using so
much memory. When you go to the afore mentioned website be prepared for an
education. If you have a simple case of not enough memory vs to many tasks
then learn to run lean...in W98. If you have "Malware" then you will find
out at doxdesk. It is a worthwhile education in Spy management.

Unused memory is wasted memory. The Windows 98 memory manager will find a use for
as much available memory as possible. Start by reading the article linked below =
