Microsoft can re-issue lost numbers.

How to replace lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware
(Right at the bottom)

You can probably also buy Windows 98se on eBay. The full or upgrade retail
is best, as it can be used for upgrade or a new install. The OEM version is
usually cheaper, but you may have problems using it as an upgrade.

I would not recommend getting a replacement key from anyone other than
Microsoft.

Troubleshooting "Invalid Product Key" Error Message During Setup

(A) You must pray for one now, as you have wiped it from...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion
ProductKey "12345-12345-12345-12345-12345"

(1) "START, Run, RegEdit"
(2) Click plus signs beginning at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", & ending with
"Windows".
(3) Click "CurrentVersion" in the left pane under "Windows".
(4) Look in right pane for ProductKey.

That is the one that was used to install your current Windows. Jot it
down, as it may work if different from the one on your Windows 98 Manual
or CD case.

(B) Microsoft: 1 800 642-7676, last I knew. Perhaps they will respond to
an original tale, if you can come up with it. Tell them a TIF monster
swallowed it!

(C) Not all numbers will work on all machines, especially if the OS is
different. Have you ever foolishly posted your number? Then, try...
http://www.google.com/ Groups
....put your name & "ProductKey" into the search.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

What sort of machine is it? If it is a brand name like Dell then it may
have its own Windows licence permanently attached to the hardware. You
might either find the details on a sticker on the machine, or you might be
able to get the complete licence details from the manufacturer just by
quoting the machine serial number.

XP questions need to asked in an XP newsgroup, as it's likely that W98 users
aren't up with the details.

You're confusing "Registration" with "Activation". Registration simply
lists you as the owner of that particular license, and comes in handy if
you need to prove to MS that *you* are the owner of the license. It's
also a way for them to get you onto their mailing lists. But you can
choose, if you like, to never Register your license at all. Activation
is the one with a 30-day deadline. Activation links the OS license to
the hardware it's installed upon. Different copies' Activation behave
differently. If it's a retail license, or a generic OEM disk that you
can get with "whitebox" builds or almost any hardware purchase, you have
the right to transfer that license to a different system at some later
date--even somewhat expected. Thus a second Activation a year after the
first may not get flagged as "piracy", and even if it does, a call to MS
can often convince them that the transfer is legit.

However, as Jeff indicated, some major OEM systems, like Dell, Gateway,
etc., have already been "Activated" before you get them--and their
operating system can't be used except on that specific machine. In
Dell's case, at least lately, they don't even provide an OS disk--you
make it yourself as soon as you get up and running, and it won't work on
any other machine. Causes more than a few problems if you're the type to
modify your Dell system much, as that will cause headaches farther down
the road should a reinstall becomes necessary.

FWIW, my reference was to tying the license to the hardware, not tying the
software to the hardware.
