Generally, DNS should be enabled on the ISP connection not on the protocol.

Yes, I have read your original post, and as I mentioned, I am not a

networking
expert. However, I have never seen any instructions that required you to

Enable DNS
in order to use a HOSTS file. I suggest you ask the question on the

Networking
newsgroup, where the experts may be able to give you an explanation for

the
behaviour.

I can tell you right now that I did not see your message till late last
night and this morning it came up just fine without any changes which I
intend to make if/when the problem reappears.

What i did different today was start out going straight through my ISP

and
not through a purely external call.

Let me know if you read my entire original post including the paragraph
about the "excruciatingly obvious" solution.

I had already read that entire page, plus 2 others because i seldom take

a
single web source as a complete answer or necessary procedure.

I don't see how that applies to this. I assume you mean the properties of the DUN
connectoid for the ISP, where primary and secondary DNS server addresses can be
entered under the TCP/IP properties for the connectoid. However, you would only add
those if your ISP specified that you must, to connect. Many if not most have you
select "Server assigned name server addresses". None of this would relate to a
HOSTS file.
