Default problems with *my computer*, IE address bar search etc

Thanks for the help I have received here!

To date I have installed and run Hijackthis, XoftSpy,
adaware, spybot, spyware blaster, and cw shredder. Got rid
of a lot of nasty stuff.

Have also installed all updates for Win98 including IE 6.

OKAY...

1. I am still having a problem with *my computer*, very
slow to respond and my cd-rom still is still not working.
(Atapi/e-ide cd-rom drive - yes it was cheap but my 4 year
old put playdoh in the first one and i didn't want to make
a big investment)

2. Computer still hangs for about 20 seconds when i first
type something (in Find, Run, IE address bar), after the
first time it is fine.

3. And now I can't search from the IE address bar.

Could there be something still on my computer that the
current spyware doesn't get rid of?

3. Click Start Settings Control Panel Internet Options Programs tab.
Click the "Reset web settings" button.
Click Ok.

2. I dunno why.....

1. What happens when you try to use the CD drive?
Does it appear in My Computer/ Windows Explorer?
Does it appear on the boot screen as seen by the BIOS?
Does it appear in Device Manager?
Do any items in Device Manager have a red X or a yellow exclamation mark on them?
In Control Panel System Performance tab, does it say 'configured for optimal
performance'?

Yes, there could still be something on your system that the spyware apps can't see.

thanks glen,
all seems to be resolved except the cdrom problem.

When i was having all the adware/virus problems, *my
computer* would hang, and if i tried to access the cdrom
(D drive) the computer would freeze and I would have to
restart. I tried to uninstall/reinstall the cdrom, now the
D drive doesn't show at all in *my c*. The floppy for
installation indicates that it has no info on this
hardware (am i having fun..?)

However, it does show in device manager, without a red x
or yellow exclamation point. Device status says it is
working properly. On settings, it doesn't have a drive
assignment, but i put in D for reserve drive (since i
didn't see one assigned.) No driver is listed for the
cdrom but when i try to add on, it indicates that there
is one locatedC:\Windows\INF\MCCDROM\INF. It is configured
for optimal performance.

And yes I see it on the boot screen (if you mean when the
computer starts up).

If you have TweakUI installed, open it (in Control Panel), and click the "My
Computer" tab in TweakUI.
Make sure there is a black check mark next to every drive letter shown there.
Click OK.

Open the C:\config.sys file using Notepad, and see if there is a "LastDrive=" line
in it.
If there is, make it LastDrive=Z
If there isn't, add the line above, save the changes.
Close Notepad and reboot.

You don't need the CDRom to install TweakUI--you download it from the link
Glen provided. Here are a couple of other things you can check:

Run regedit.exe and open it to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup
In the right pane, look for a last drive statement and make sure it reads
"Z"

Control panel, system, performance tab: is there any comment about MSDos
compatibility mode?

Right-click the TweakUI.inf file and select install. Should a notice appear
saying a disk is required, click OK and another screen appears. Click
browse, go to the folder containing Tweak, OK and OK.

I suspect that TweakUI isn't going to help either but it is still worth the
effort just in case.
