Only getting 16 colors on the monitor.
I have a Windows 98 system. The computer is a mutt. A friend helped me
out when the power system went, then he got ambitious and loaded in a bunch of stuff. So I'm really not too certain what all is in here. Anyway, when we got the computer back, it worked for a while. Then for some reason, it would only display 16 colors on the monitor! 16 colors is also all that comes up when you check the monitor preferences. I've gone so far as to find the specific drivers for this specific monitor and load them into the system, still only getting 16 colors. Now I know it was working before, I don't know what happened to lock the settings this way. Any ideas? thanks in advance. |

I can't believe that some people are so retarded when it comes to using windoze. Look fool. Right-click somewhere on an empty area of the desktop. A drop-down list will appear. Select "Properties". A window will pop up. It will have 5 or 6 tabs across the top. Select the "Settings" tab. You will see 2 slider controls. Once for the number of colors/bits, another for screen resolution. Set them as appropriate or as desired. If the only choice for color is 15 or 256 colors, and/or if the choice for screen resolution is no higher than 640 x 480 or 800 x 600, then either you have a really crappy/old video card, or the drivers for the card are not installed, or they're the wrong drivers. To take this one step further, close that window, then right-click on the "my computer" icon and select "properties". Click the "device manager" tab. There will be an entry for "Display Adapter". Is there a yellow exclamation mark (!) beside it? If not, click the [+} beside Display Adapter and report back what is listed under it. |

It's not the driver for the monitor that matters - it's the driver for the
video display adapter. You need to locate and download the correct drivers for the video adapter card and install them according to the instructions from the video adapter card manufacturer. Use the Display Adapter entry in Device Manager to confirm that the correct drivers have been installed - if the system does not have the correct drivers for the card then it will be described as a generic VGA. If the correct drivers are installed then the name of the video card chipset will be displayed in the item. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "disneygeek" wrote in message ... Well, thanks for the supportive help! I think, if you'd read the message, I'd mentioned that it was running just fine and for some reason STOPPED running full color and only started running 16 color. Nothing changed. Same computer, same monitor, same settings. Just for some reason the higher color setting disappeared. |
