Hard Drives cannot work together
I recently get a new hard drive, so I can transfer files from old hard drive.
Both of them are external hard drive. However they don't like each other, and only one of them will show up at my computer. When I check system log, the one does not show up indicate: "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all drivers installed. (Code 10.) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device." I did upgrade for both of them, but still the same problem. Can any one tell me what went wrong, and what should I do? Tanks |

More data is needed.
What make.model drives are we talking about? Ext. HDDs are usually USB2 or Firewire. Which are yours? Both types of connection can be daisy-chained. Are you doing that? If not, please explain in detail exactly how your drives are hooked up. What plugs into where? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User "Terry" wrote in message ... What make.model drives are we talking about?
One of them is Maxtor (I cannot remember model, probebly "Personal Storage") The other one is WesternDigit "Dual-Combo Drive" with USB connection port. Ext. HDDs are usually USB2 or Firewire. Which are yours? Both HD are connected to my computer through USB port; however I think it might be a USB1 cause I got this computer last centenary Both types of connection can be daisy-chained. Are you doing that? If not, please explain in detail exactly how your drives are hooked up. What plugs into where? The Maxtor HD once connect and read by computer, it cannot be removed or disconnect. This one usually always connect to computer and turn on/off at same time. If I trun computer on first, I can trun Maxtor HD power on and it will connect, just cannot removed. I can connect (just by turn it on) and disconnect (using safely remove function) WesternDigit anytime I want as long as Maxtor HD is not in its way. I hope this will help. |

OK. Yes, USB1 may be part of the problem.
I have to think that you're plugging both into the same controller, the controller is ancient technology, and it's onboard, too(?), and that this is at the root of the issue. Don't expect me to explain the quirks of USB, though, especially in Windows 98. All in all, it's one big crapshoot. All I can suggest it to *try* a USB card. Is this Win98 Original Flavor or is it Windows 98 SE? Either way, get a USB2 card like this one: http://www.buy.com/prod/Adaptec_USB_.../10356836.html I'm betting the newer technology on the card will handle both drives properly. Even if you're running Win98FE, not SE, and can only get USB1. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User "Terry" wrote in message ... What make.model drives are we talking about?
