Default problems with defrag

problems with defragging my system disk. program runs endlessly. trying to
enter safe mode to defrag from there but no luck. wont enter safe mode.

i used to have a dual boot system (win98 SE and Windows XP Professional) and
have removed the the disk with XP OS. the boot.ini from the dualboot still
remains in the root directory of the system disk:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

i have not edited it. maybe that's what is causing the problem. any
thoughts on this?

No, Boot.ini isn't the problem.

To enter Safe Mode: StartRunMSCONFIGenter. Click on Advanced button at
lower right. Put a check mark in "Enable Startup Menu". OK your way out,
restart. After restarting, the Startup Menu should appear, whence you can
choose Safe Mode. Usually takes a long time to load, so be patient. If you
encounter errors or the boot gets stuck, then that's something else to focus
on.

As for running Defrag, see my article, "Clean Boot -- What it is and why you
need it."
