Default Can't remove an Icon From desktop

I have a folder named Tempeary Internet Files on my
Desktop. I don't know how it got there but I can't remove
it. When I right Click on it the drop down options are
Open, Explore and Create Shortcut. I can not open the
folder either? The folder icon looks like the Internet
Explorer History Icon in the middle of a folder. How can I
remove this Icon??

Thanks, Larry

Can it be that something moved your TIFs to the Desktop? (Yow.)

(a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
Where does it say Temporary Internet Files are located?
That is the REAL one.
(b) "START, Find, F/F".
(c) Enter "Tempor~1" (no quotes) in "Named".
(d) Click the "Advanced" button, & use the dropdown to select
"Folder".
(e) Then click the "Find Now" button.
If you have more than one "Temporary Internet Files" folder, you
may delete the one's that are not real.

If TIFs are not where you want them, here's how to move it to
"C:\Windows\"...

1. Close all open windows, except Internet Properties
2. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
3. Click "Move Folder"
4. In "Browse for Folder" requestor:
a. Click plus to left of C:
b. Highlight "Windows"
c. Click OK
5. It will ask; give it permission to re-boot

After this, if you already had a set in the destination folder, it may
not have been wiped completely. Therefore...

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, check 'Delete all
offline content', OK, Apply, OK". May as well click to clear "History"
while there.

Now, TIFs are where you want them, and all is well with the world.
Better check on it now/then, though, as mine have snuck back twice--
probably after Windows Update.

Thanks for the reply,
I went to find and typed in Tempor~1. I found a
Temporary Internet file in C.

What I have on my desktop is a folder with an icon in
the middle that is the same as the history icon in
Internet Explorer. I don't think this is really a folder
for the temorary internet files. I can't do anything with
it. I can't open it. I can't delete, drag it to the
Recycle Bin or put it into any other folder. I've had it
on my desktop for a long time now. I just decided that I
would try to remove it.

Thanks, Larry

Where PRECISELY is the location of Temporary Internet Files-- both
looking in Internet Options AND with Find of Tempor~1?

Here is something else...

(1) A folder named "C:\Program" would do something like that. "C:\File"
is also forbidden. (Naturally, "C:\Program Files" is fine.)

I did test it myself. A folder named "C:\Program" opens a cute little
folder in the upper left of the Desktop, named "Program", at boot. When
you try to delete it in Explorer, you get a second warning after the
confirm of delete, saying something like "system settings (files?) may
be affected".

(2) http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;228502
Windows Explorer Starts When You Start Your Computer

"START, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
& delete "DeskTopProcess" this way:

(a) Click the plus signs beginning with "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" & ending at
"CurrentVersion".
(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane (not it's plus sign).
(c) R-Clk "DeskTopProcess" in the right pane (if there) & delete it.
(d) Then close the registry editor and reboot. (Careful in the Registry,
though.)

(3) If those aren't it, then examine "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software
Environment, Startup Programs" for an anomaly. If you don't see it, then
use the Edit menu to select all & copy, & post it. (Edit the output &
put spaces between the lines before posting.)

One poster had a mention of "Win.ini" in MSInfo32. It turned out "START,
Run, MSConfig, Win.ini tab, [Windows] section" had "run= ." (That's a
period [.]). This normally reads "run=", (and "load=" is also normal).

When I try putting it in the Recyce Bin it forms a circle
with a line through it. When I try moving it into a folder
I get a message "You cannot move or copy this item to this
location. Do you want to create a shortcut to the item
instead? The option is Yes or No.

(1) Can you navigate to this Registry, & report what you see...?...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\De
sktop\NameSpace

All I have there is Recycle Bin & My Documents...
.......Export of that Key...................
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\D
esktop\NameSpace]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\D
esktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer\D
esktop\NameSpace\{450d8fba-ad25-11d0-98a8-0800361b1103}]
@="My Documents"

.......End of Export..........................

(2) I see nothing in your Startup Group that could be doing it, in the
way I thought it might do. If the following does not handle it, I will
show you how to delete that Desktop item in DOS.

(3) It doesn't seem natural that TIFs should be in C:\, which is the
root directory. Can it be, having them on C:\ has the same effect as
having a folder named "C:\Program"? How did that come to be? Perhaps
move them to "C:\Windows", per my prior post...

If TIFs are not where you want them, here's how to move it to
"C:\Windows\"...

1. Close all open windows, except Internet Properties
2. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
3. Click "Move Folder"
4. In "Browse for Folder" requestor:
a. Click plus to left of C:
b. Highlight "Windows"
c. Click OK
5. It will ask; give it permission to re-boot

After this, if you already had a set in the destination folder, it may
not have been wiped completely. Therefore...

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, check 'Delete all
offline content', OK, Apply, OK". May as well click to clear "History"
while there.

Default Can't remove an Icon from Desktop

At
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersio
n\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace I have
Recycle Bin, My Documents & (Default) Temporary Internet
Files. Didn't get to check out the rest of your
suggestions yet,
Thanks for your help, Larry

-----Original Message-----
(1) Can you navigate to this Registry, & report what you

see...?...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersi

on\explorer\De
sktop\NameSpace

All I have there is Recycle Bin & My Documents...
.......Export of that Key...................
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersi
on\explorer\D
esktop\NameSpace]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersi
on\explorer\D
esktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersi
on\explorer\D
esktop\NameSpace\{450d8fba-ad25-11d0-98a8-0800361b1103}]
@="My Documents"

.......End of Export..........................

(2) I see nothing in your Startup Group that could be

doing it, in the
way I thought it might do. If the following does not

handle it, I will
show you how to delete that Desktop item in DOS.

(3) It doesn't seem natural that TIFs should be in C:\,

which is the
root directory. Can it be, having them on C:\ has the

same effect as
having a folder named "C:\Program"? How did that come to

be? Perhaps
move them to "C:\Windows", per my prior post...

If TIFs are not where you want them, here's how to move

it to
"C:\Windows\"...

1. Close all open windows, except Internet Properties
2. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
3. Click "Move Folder"
4. In "Browse for Folder" requestor:
a. Click plus to left of C:
b. Highlight "Windows"
c. Click OK
5. It will ask; give it permission to re-boot

After this, if you already had a set in the destination

folder, it may
not have been wiped completely. Therefore...

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button,

check 'Delete all
offline content', OK, Apply, OK". May as well click to

clear "History"
while there.

Default Can't remove an Icon from Desktop

That is it, then...

Delete "(default) Temporary Internet Files".

The line should immediately reappear as "(default) (value not set)".
If the Desktop item does not immediately disappear, then reboot.

I still think you should move TIFs to "C:\Windows", though.
