Drivers
Experienced a problem earlier this week whereby Outlook Express would crash
as soon as I tried to access it ("fatal exception has occurred at 028:C02817E* in VxD VMM(06)"). Occasionally I could access via the Mail tab of Internet Explorer but it was intermittent. In any event worked with a couple of experts in Outlook Express Ng and it turned out to be the video drivers. Among other things, I reinstalled the drivers and all is now well, or so it seems. However I just noticed in SYSTEM INFORMATION that I have a whole bunch of drivers missing. For example; DISPLAY enugfxcg.hlp hpd01020.icm hpd086E0. icm hpd04EA0.icm hpd04860.icm INPUT idvkd.sys All of above show DRIVER NOT INSTALLED, however with the exception of the last one which I can't find on my system, a search indicates the drivers are located in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. In Device Manager, I noted that no drivers were needed for my HP monitor but there was a note in the general tab saying something to the effect that an unknown problem existed. I uninstalled in Safe mode and the message disappeared upon startup, however the hp drivers under DISPLAY above still show as missing. How can I reinstall the missing drivers if it doesn't ask where they are located after I reinstall? I have several others like that for a printer and a scanner. Thanks in advance Dan |

This is from the "read Me" of my nVidia driver install. It may help you on
the display. __________________________________________________ _____________ " Driver Installation Hints "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers. Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly. Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove." __________________________________________________ ______________ I do not use OE. So can't help you there. But if you have to use IE repair it is better to do it with virus scanner turned off. ICM files are not drivers. They are colour matching definition files for the
particular devices. If you don't have these devices then you don't need the files. You may have the option to add specific colour matching files under the advanced option of your display driver. The HLP file won't affect the operation of the display. The IDVKD file is associated with your keyboard. It may be a spelling mistake, as hidvkd.sys is on your W98 installation CD. If you don't have a problem with the keyboard then you can ignore it. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Dapper Dan" wrote in message ... Thanks poatt. I appreciate you taking the time to forward me instructions
for installing your drivers. I suspect instructions should be uniform. I uninstalled in Safe mode and reinstalled in a Clean Boot environment. I did not go into ADD/REMOVE and uninstall the software first so it's possible that something got screwed up. The system is working now, the only thing that seems wrong is that I can't maintain AUTOMATICALLY EXPAND GROUPED MESSAGES, which is what started crashing OE in the first place. I may uninstall and reinstall all tomorrow. Thanks for your feedback too, Jeff. I was merely reporting what SYSTEM INFORMATION reported, however if they are files and are not required, so be it. BTW, idvkd.sys was not a typo on my part; again it's what System Info reported. While the above reported drivers may have been files, they were only a few examples of apparent errors in my system. I do in fact have drivers that are not installed yet appear to be on my system. I still wonder how do I get them installed, if the installation misses them. Specifically, HPGDTSTI.INF shows as DRIVER NOT INSTALLED, however it is located on C:\Windows\INF. Thanks again for your help. Dan "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ... ICM files are not drivers. The mistake I was referring to is probably in an INF file - System Info sees
this file name listed and assumes it is required, but it is actually a mistake and the required file is, in fact, properly installed. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Dapper Dan" wrote in message ... snip Thanks for your feedback too, Jeff. OK. I think I'm hearing that I should ignore Driver Not Installed.
