system.ini startup problem

hello there i was hoping someone can help me??
i am new to computing and i have a problem!!
i tried to uninstall Norton Antivirus 2002 so i could install Norton
Antivirus 2004 but when i startup my computer i get the following
message-
cannot find device file in system.ini to run an application in windows
try to uninstall (or something along those lines!!)
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\NAVAP.VXD
C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386
could someone tell me what ive done or how i can fix it,i dont have
the Norton Antivirus 2002 disc but i can get it if it helps me.
i also recieve a blue screen(sometimes) stating:
a fatal error has occured in OE at 016F :BFF8AB97 could this be linked
to my other problem?

You should visit the Symantec www site and search for a
utility to remove the previous version of Norton. Note
that 2004 is a very unreliable software package and will
likely create many problems for you.

hi again i would like to thank you whoever you are, i followed all the
instructions on the Symantec website and this seems to have solved my
problem.in your post you said that Norton 2004 may cause problems can
you recommend any free sites where i can download some antivirus tools
as money is a little tight for me at the moment.
