Default display settings

i'm running windows 98se. upon starting up windows after the load screen, my
monitor turns black and stays that way until i restart it. it will then
restart in safe mode a display box with 'desktop' at the top pops us telling
me that "problem could be caused by your network or hardware settings. make
sure these settings are correct in Control Panel and then try starting
windows again." when windows is loaded i am unable to change any settings in
control panel under my display. however after restarting, windows loads in
normal mode, and then another display box pops up telling me that my settings
need to be changed and the Control Panel pops up allowing me to change my
display settings. although when i try to change my display and restart my
computer the same thing happens each time no matter which setting i put it on
it always goes back to 16 colors 640x480 pixels. display: super VGA 800x600
on diamond viper v770/ viper v770 ultra. any help would be greatly
appreciated, thanks!

Instal or reinstal the most up to date Win98SE driver
for your particular video card as displayed via
/ start / settings / control panel / system / device manager./ Display
adapters
Write down the filepath to the driver.

Method A is to remove all video drivers that appear and
reboot, hoping Windows will prompt you to instal it.
Method B is to use the /device manager / [exact name]
panel marked / Driver / Update.

Post results here.

If your driver for this is not the latest or if you do not have the disks to
reinstall the driver, then I suggest that you download the driver from
Diamondmm.com.

To install this driver, you probably need to change the driver to Standard
VGA (Control Panel, Display) and then run the exe file that you download.
The exe file will probably run the installation for the card. In some
cases, the files are simply extracted to a folder on your drive but in
others, when the extraction process completes, the installation
automatically starts.

Here's the link to Diamond Multimedia Drivers & Support:

http://www.diamondmm.com/driversbefore912003.php

Click PC Compatible computers video cards, then scroll to the bottom of the
page to find the Viper 770 driver download.
