W98SE and USB 2.0
I've just built a computer for my grandson using a good MB (MSI K8N Neo
V2.0). Everything is fine apart from the USB Ports. They are shown as OK in Device Manager and I have successfully loaded the drivers from the drivers CD which came with the MB. However there is no re-action when use of either the 2 front USB sockets or the built-in 4 back sockets, apart from the very first time I attempted to use when I got something like "......mass storage....". Since then nothing. Even the red light on the USB stick does not come on. In the pub, a friend says the W98SE will not recognise USB 2.0. Is this so? If not, does anyone have any idea what is wrong. I have always found USB no problem in the past, although recently I have been working with XXP PRO. Thanks. |

W98SE and USB 2.0
When I put a new motherboard in my PC I found some of BIOS settings were not
as they should be. Do you confirm that USB is enable in the BIOS? Also, There are a number of Microsoft updates for Win 98 SE USB which you should load as well. The following unofficial website has a lot of help. http://www.usbman.com/win98seusbguide.htm One of the fixes listed is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q240075/ -USB Devices May Not Work in Windows 98 Second Edition. As far as I am aware, USB2 has a higher power capability and that is no major difference. In fact I am running USB2 on my ASUS motherboard with Win 98 SE no problems. If you were running Win 98 than this would be a different story. You may well also want to read on the USBMAN website the section relevant to you operating system as check to see that you have everything covered off. Alan "TonyK" wrote in message ... I have always found USB no problem in the past, although recently I have been working with XXP PRO. Thanks. I have a USB 2.0 card connected to my P-III Class motherboard under Win98SE. It works fine, as does the USB 1.0 that shipped with the motherboard. I don't think it's an OS related problem. What are you trying to plug into these sockets? Perhaps the peripherals you are attempting to use require their own drivers. EX. I have a HP Photosmart 7700 usb printer attached. In addition to the USB 2.0 cards drivers, this HP printer needs it's own drivers in order to function. This is also true for my Western Digital External usb drive. It has its own drivers as well. You might also want to ask your question at alt.hardware.pc.homebuilt If it isn't a question of missing drivers for the devices, it may be a hardware problem. If that's the case, alt.hardware.pc.homebuilt is the better Usenet newsgroups forum. -- ________ To email me, Edit "blog" from my email address. Brian M. You need to use the manufacturers drivers that
came with stick. If you dont have those, scroll down to some other usb posts here (recent) that have a link to possible 'other' drivers. Gekko "TonyK" wrote in message ...
