I have tried to replace a working ps2 mouse or an usb mouse and it does not
help either. I still get the error message. Will reformat help? I prefer not to go through this route as I don not have the drivers anymore. Look forward for some expert advice here and thanks "helen" wrote: If I may add, so,etims it shows : " 'while initialisiing device VKd:" Windows protect_ 'blinking' rgds "helen" wrote: IBM aptiva and using win98se. Seems to me that I recall this being a keyboard problem. I would try a
different keyboard. Anyone else remember if this relates to the keyboard? "helen" wrote in message ... IBM aptiva and using win98se. A little google and I find that VK stands for virtual keyboard. Usually
related to a keyboard with extra buttons for volume etc. Might relate to the drivers for the keyboard. Solutions: 1) turn off computer, unplug keyboard, replug keyboard, reboot, 2) try reinstalling the drivers for your multimedia keyboard, 3) try a new keyboard (preferably one without the extras). Hope this helps. "helen" wrote in message ... IBM aptiva and using win98se. Boot DOS from a floppy (or CD) and with any text editor open SYSTEM.INI. 2. Search for string 'VKD". If there is one, it is probably in the section [386Enh] i.e. 32-bit modules. The null command for keyboards is keyboard=*vkd If you see anything else, it is probably a command to load some special KB software (missing or corrupted in your PC. 3. If so, just insert a semicolon ; in the leftmost position and type in the next new line keyboard=*vkd then save file and exit and reboot into Safe Mode. If your KB is in working order you may be able to start Safe Mode OK, then see what other repairs may be needed. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

This thread seems to point to something wrong in the keyboard circuits on
the motherboard -- she's tried a different keyboard, so it's unlikely that the keyboard itself is the problem. Just thought I'd remind folks that there's more to the keyboard than just the keyboard, s. -- Gary S. In that case you may have a corrupt vkd.vxd, registry, system.dat and/or bad
clusters on the hard drive. The first question is: Can you boot to Safe Mode? If not continue with the below. Bootup with a 98 DOS boot disk. At the prompt type the below commands and press Enter after each run of 3. Note that a space is denoted by ^, do not type the ^. scanreg ^ /fix scanreg ^ /fix scanreg ^ /fix Reboot the machine and see if it will boot to your desktop. If no joy, boot to DOS again and type the below: scanreg ^ /restore Select a date prior to the problem to restore the registry. Follow the prompts and reboot. If still no joy, back at the prompt again type: scandisk ^ /surface When completed reboot. -- Brian A.
