However, you complained that you couldn't get it to work and that it
"stole" associations of file types from other players when you installed
it.

The reason it took file associations is because you _let_it_ take them
during installation. There should be screens during the install that
let you select and unselect using the player for various file types.

The probable reason for not being able to play videos correctly in the
program could be due to outdated display drivers or outdated DirectX
installation, or that you need to modify the Video settings in VLC's
Preferences Video Settings. Try switching the Display Output setting
from Default to OpenGL video output, and click the Save button. If that
doesn't work, try one of the other settings.

Thanks for the reminder! I have a note that that VLC player will only
play flv videos at some FIXED size, can't fill the screen. Sothink
solved my problem.

I went to the link in your next email, downloaded and installed [or is
that reinstalled] VLC only to haveit tell me to install a "more recent
version of Windows" ???!!!

Even at Christmas, filled with Holiday 'cheer', I ad difficulty
'seeing' the images in there. mushrooms, or not!

It sounds like the series of ?? might work, I'll try that next.

But, it is amazing to me that all these things, DON'T work.

Say what? Start whatever video file it is you want to play in VLC, then
double-click on the video screen and it will go to Full Screen.
Double-click in the video again and it will toggle back to window size.

You have to scroll down to the Win98 section and download version 0.8.6
for Win98. Did you do that?
You also need to install the Unicode Layer for Win98 if you have not
done so yet, and then extract the files to the Windows\System folder:

Thank you for the URL and detailed instructions, but...

I think I've had those two files from unicow.exe installed for quite
some time.

Remember, I had VLC running once, and complained the screen size was
fixed at small, no little square to click on and make it big. OK

Now I use Sothink for the flv player that gave me full screen, but I
had to modify the registry to allow spaces in the filenames, and
that's ok.

So, let's try using vlc o pen that jittery avi file,. shift right
click and open with VLC.exe, comes up and then shows vertical stripes.

Ok, let's go back, go to the flv file and shift right click, open with
vlc, solid cyan colored screen.

VLC DOES NOT work now. Hmmmm.

I uninstalled VLC, cleaned all, rebooted, installed VLC, and VLC will
NOT work again. ??

Just like my other response, vlc won't open .flv, just get vertical
stripes, won't open .swf just get vertical stripes, won't open .avi
[what I was originally trying to get working] just get vertical
stripes.

I have something good with flv, and something goode with swf, but I
was hoping to solve the speed problem opening .avi

What I don't understand is that mediaplayer used to open these files
with vertical lines, too. Then suddenly they opened them perfectly
and have continued to do so.

Not sure I want to fix this, since I'm covered. Perhaps the vlc I
used before was slightly an earlier edition? On Nov of this year. No
it can't be. because I left the .exe in the download section and it
has Nov date and the same version numbers and the right size. Thing
just does NOT work.

The avi file says it's being played using Microsoft Media Player
version 6.4.07.1121, which gives me full screen, so I guess I'm done,
just don't no why this stuff is so out of control. I know last month,
Media Player used to open an avi and show only vertical stripes, much
like vlc is now doing.
