Help, my views got messed up and "folder options" is now restricted
"SlickRCBD" wrote in message ...
I have no idea what has happened here, I think vista somehow messed something up when I connected to a file share, but even that seems odd since I've been doing this for 6 months. I'm using Windows 98SE and have files shares on a LAN to a Vista 64 Home Premium machine. I can't choose "folder options" in the My Documents folder or any random subfolder. When I try to do so, I get a message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". snip Back up your registry, then start regedit, expand and highlight the following keys and look in the right window for "NoFolderOptions". If you find it, delete it. You may have to restart the computer for the change to take effect. Help, my views got messed up and "folder options" is nowrestricted
Sorry I took so long to reply, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are
long days & nights for me, and I have very little free time. I'm attending night school to get a better degree since I've been having trouble getting a permanent job. I was too exhausted after class to even check for replies. You have avoided the recommendations defined by Microsoft to NOT share these for/in its networking functions. I don't really think I need DSclient anymore and haven't for the last 2.5 years. However, things were working fine so I left them alone. Nope, Vista's problem is that trying to access it's shares cause the 98 machine to lock up. Accessing shares from a virtual machine running XP Pro on the same hardware have no such problem. I had e-mail correspondance with Microsoft last spring and they were unable to resolve the problem. This problem with folder options happens on the real Windows 98 machine. But you ARE, because the Win98 computer is not in-control of itself at the moment... and I realized that it WAS the Win98 computer with the folder issues. ** So what *EXACTLY* have you already tried so I don't spend a few days writing things already run through. ** FYI: No one in the networking/server field likes to spend days trying to discover, through lengthy discussions, what issues may be involved in the diagnostics; so ALWAYS provide detailed network and settings information with ANY request for help. I've tried to search with Google for similar issues, and found a reference to "NoFolderOptions". I found no such entires in my registry. I've tried unsharing the directories to no effect. I have no clue what could cause this, and don't know what else to try. While typing this I just got the idea to try turning off file sharing entirely. You *definitely* want to _stop using the administrator's account_ for all usage, for a start, then check the recent changes done in VISTA from MS updates. Microsoft has modified some of the XP, VISTA, WIn7 security due to constant security issues in mixed networks, and you may have just received some of those updates. *IF* you have shared something between the computers in My Documents, then the network {the machines sharing those areas/documents} will control those activities. I don't think Windows 98 has that distinction. I've been using this setup for many years without a problem. I think you're thinking of 2000/XP/Vista for the different types of user accounts. Anyways, I can get the folder options dialog box to come up from Start-settings-folder options, but the "remember each folder's view settings" does NOT work. Worse, in despartion I tried resetting my folder's views. Now I can't get the My Documents to stay in details view sorted by type. That's what I want the default view to be. Using the control panel to get into it, I the option of "like this folder" for setting defaults is dimmed. So, what could be restricting my access to folder options, and how do I fix it? I'm not part of a domain, there should be no group policy. I don't have a group policy editor. I'm the admin, but don't have a clue how to fix this problem. Well, like it or not, you ARE part of a network in which sharing and security *IS* under control of the settings on the various computers, the NT based being more likely to affect others within the network. I managed to fix the views partially by rebooting to safe mode and using "scanreg /restore", but Folder Options is still FUBAR and I don't think any changes "stick". This should have been a clue that the problem was on win98, I don't think this feature was present on XP, although I don't know if they brought it back for Vista. -- MEB It was, but you indicated "I am the administrator" aspect *after* indicating no policies installed in Win98, so it needed defined for clarity. UNLESS policies were used, never mention administrator settings in a 9X including network WITHOUT directing absolutely. I use one account that has full access for the win98se computer. It worked fine when I had a 98SE and an XP computer, and I didn't see any reason why I should have changed it. I originally set up the VIsta computer to auto-log in as a normal user, but then I found that several of the older games I've been playing need to be run as an admin and I really hated being asked for a password every time I tried to run them. Damned UAC didn't even let me use the runas alias trick. Do you want help, or am I going to find reluctance and more indications like this. One of the simplest potential fixes would be to advise the COMPLETE removal ALL the prior networking settings from your computers and start from scratch... just remember that VISTA DID receive some updates which make 9X connections even more difficult than originally involved. I don't see why you're being so snappish, I do need help. I've had two long days on Tuesday and Wednesday and haven't had time to deal with this. I came home, cleared the driveway from the snow, and went to bed. No they didn't bring it back for VISTA or Win7, it was only available in Win9X and somewhat in NT3; newer MS OSs run their own services/servers and use different routines and controls. LONG GONE are simple networking, replaced with more secured functioning. I'm confused. I just want to get the win98 computer as you said back in control of itself. I'm not using domains, just workgroups. I haven't ever used a domain at home, but three years ago I did connect to one via a VPN. The Vista computer has never needed domain services and I was under the impression that the Home Premium OS didn't support any such things like you are describing. I'm sorry, while I'm somewhat knowledgable in XP, at least to satisfy the requirements for exams MCSA. I have no training with Vista beyond what I've learned myself from using it. I'll say it again, I'm well aware that I don't have the best security practices here at home, but I'm not very concerned with intranet security on the LAN, only preventing people from the internet from getting in. I know relying on the hardware firewall is not the most secure thing ,but it should be sufficient for my HOME NETWORK. As I previously stated, I basically set things up the same way I did with my two preceding Windows XP computers (one is dead, the other I gave away) and never had such problems. There was nothing to indicate that Vista would cause a problem that didn't happen with XP. |

The shear number of hacked computers have caused "jailing" [a term familiar to Linux users, perhaps not so much for Windows users] and deeper reliance on *forcing* users into a more secured mode. Windows users REALLY don't like it very much... So the general presumption for this discussion is that you ran back through all the network settings and made sure nothing changed that you could see... Do you want help, or am I going to find reluctance and more indications like this. I know relying on the hardware firewall is not the most secure thing ,but it should be sufficient for my HOME NETWORK. Just a couple, the rest is left alone: Vista is as VISTA is... the extent of administrative abilities are limited in lessor versions [Pro v others, just like XP] but basic and inherent security and networking are just about the same. And you, of all people should know that a hardware firewall is insufficient. The Internet "gets in" everytime you connect to it. As I previously stated, I basically set things up the same way I did with my two preceding Windows XP computers (one is dead, the other I gave away) and never had such problems. There was nothing to indicate that Vista would cause a problem that didn't happen with XP. There were always problems with VISTA networking and other OSs, though you may not have had the extent of issues that one not carrying a Certification would have had, and which had previously networked to 9X. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |

Just like the time that I couldn't get "find target" to work when getting properties on a shortcut or "open containing folder" in find file to work. |

The particular key you looked at/for might look like this in a highly configured machine [either manually or via some pre-made reg tweak]: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" hex:95,00,00,00 "ClearRecentDocsOnExit" dword:00000001 "NoFolderOptions" dword:00000001 "NoBandCustomize" dword:00000001 "NoToolbarCustomize" dword:00000001 "NoControlPanel" dword:00000001 "NoPrinters" dword:00000001 "NoPrinterTabs" dword:00000001 "NoDeletePrinter" dword:00000001 "NoAddPrinter" dword:00000001 "NoToolsMenu" dword:00000001 "NoWinKeys" dword:00000001 "NoSetFolders" dword:00000001 "NoActiveDesktopChanges" dword:00000001 "NoChangeStartMenu" dword:00000001 "NoRun" dword:00000001 "NoFind" dword:00000001 "NoSetTaskbar" dword:00000001 I found 3 versions of this in 3 separate keys, but no instance of "NoFolderOptions". Searching also came up blank. Since they are all duplicates, I'm only going to post an export of one of them. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies \Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=hex:b5,00,00,00 "CDRAutoRun"=hex:00,00,00,00 "EditLevel"=dword:00000000 "NoRun"=dword:00000000 "NoClose"=dword:00000000 "NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000 "NoFileMenu"=dword:00000000 @=hex:00,00,00,00 "NoLogoff"=hex:01,00,00,00 "NoActiveDesktopChanges"=hex:00,00,00,00 "NoDrives"=hex:00,01,00,00 "NoActiveDesktop"=hex:00,00,00,00 Okay, it is the right key, try and add the "NoFolderOptions" dword:00000000, uhm, make sure to export the key before hand and save the registry of course. It may make a difference, though I'm not so sure it will. But it is a start and something you found to try.. Wish Comcast hadn't dropped their newserver, but now I'm stuck with Google Groups. The registry edit had no visible effect at all. I wonder if that Open Office remover that FUBARed the "open containing folder" in Find File and the "find target" when getting properties on a shortcut also FUBARed folder options and I need to replace a .dll. Any idea which .dll to replace? It's possible that I hadn't tried to access folder options in months, this IS my old computer after all. |
