The two problems are probably related.
You could try a surge supressor that has a telephone receptacle in it that
may protect the line from overcurrent or overvoltage.

One other note: Every now and then I get an error message that says
"excessive line current. May cause damage to your modem. Unplug your
telephone line to avoid damage to your modem" I called the phone
company to ask them if they had overrent on their lines and of course
they said no. Any more ideas?
