That's right.I actually uninstalled it from Start/Programs/Norton Antivirus
Uninstall and NOT remove it from ADD/REMOVE Programs properties. And still
this problem cropped up. I can go to the Registry and delete the relevant
file.
Thanks for the help.

When you say "removed" it, I assume you removed it the proper way, by
*uninstalling it*, and not simply deleting the program. If that is not
true, the simplest approach would probably be to reinstall it, reboot (to
complete the installation), and then uninstall it, and reboot again to
complete the uninstallation processes.

Otherwise - it's time to dip into the registry, and the system.ini and
win.ini files, looking for the appropriate references to Norton, and
(CAREFULLY) deleting them.

My friend has a WIN 98 SE. Inadvertently, it also had Norton 2.0 meant

Win 95. I have removed it and installed AVG 7.0 Free Edition which is
working well. However, when starting the screen shows as under:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows
application.
The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but

the
device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated
application using its uninstall or set up program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device

file,
try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
