OK, I tried that and the message I received was "specified
service already exists." Yet each time I want to open an
msi file, it asked me which program to use and I thought
it would automatically open any MSI extension.

Laura,
I would recommend that you reinstall the latest version
of the Windows
Installer. KB 324638 (see below) includes instructions
as to how to install
v2.0 of the Windows Installer including a link from which
you can download a
new copy.
MS KB 324638 - "OFFXP: "The MSIEXEC.EXE File Is Linked
to a Missing Export
MSI.DLL:222" Error Message When You Try to Install,
Update, or Remove a
Windows Installer-Based Program"
(
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=324638).
Note that it is essential that you rename or delete all
copies of msi.dll
before attempting to install the Windows Installer. The
KB article explains
how to do this.

It looks as though it is associated with the windows
installer yet, obviously it isn't doing what it is
supposed to. Any idea how to re-install the installer?
