Thank you! I did find a old back-up the registry and was able to reinstall
it. This allowed the PC to boot (with a bunch of errors), but I was then able
to clean the reg & system files. All is good now.

Windows setup executables on the hard drive, rename them temporarily
and see what effect that has. You also might try StartupList. I suggest
you extract the executable to the c:\ drive in Safe mode and run it with
the "/full" switch.
