Hi Dan,

So, Star is your plan to format now and go with a dual-boot 98SE/XP Pro.
This is the way my system is configured with c:\drive having 98SE with

Fat32
and d:\drive having XP Pro. with NTFS. I have not bothered with extra
partitions but it is something that I may end up doing down the line.

Also,
I have only a little knowledge of the registry and my skills mainly lie in
trying to get PC's clean from baddies. (aka spyware, viruses, malware,
adware, etc. -- my word for all of it) It is kinda nice that 98SE does

not
even know that XP exists and I am currently working to get my 98SE install
nice and ready and then I plan to work more on getting XP Pro. configured
properly.

* yes, mine was configured the same, I formatted 3 partition though, 98se
automatically goes to C:\ and was installed first, D:\was my partition for
data, E:\was XP F:\my Iomega zip, etc....

My plan may be to purchase 2000-Pro, I like it and it's a step up from
98-se.

Apple computers are okay but I hate using a one-button mouse.
Also, if you are a big artist, music fan or computer graphic designer then

an
Apple may be best for you but if you are an all-around computer user then

I
suggest Windows. Finally, there is even Linux to consider which I hear

has
more stability than Windows but I have not used it. Remember that to have
the largest software library at our disposal then Windows is the way to

go.
I hope someone more knowledgeable than myself can help you fix your

computer.
BTW, can you possibly return your computer and get a brand new one. I

think
that Dell computers are fairly cheap or you could always build your system
from the ground up. Perhaps the refurbished parts are somewhat defective.

I
actually have never used a refurbished computer.

No, Dan, I built my P-3 while taking A+ certification, all new parts!! After
2 yrs.I had problems. A tech at Boeing & old friend rebuilt it for me, all
new, MB, P-4 cpu, etc..... I bought everything new, CD-RW, DVD, etc....
Maxtor HD not new, Iomega not new and modem is old, new floppy drive
though!!

I particularly don't like working inside the box, the MB can be hard to
place in the case. I TB-SHT Windows for myself and others. I'm strong on
partitioning, formatting & installing Windows and devices. I can usually
get a system up, even if it means taking it down and doing a clean install.
A+ is not my calling, however I require a working puter!!

I'm not a geek or Windows guru, I just do the above well!!
