Normal.dot was the problem. I am eternally grateful.

And if uninstalling McAfee doesn't fix it then *maybe* you have a
damaged 'normal.dot' template.

One of the most common problems with Word not opening is due to a
faulty (corrupted) 'normal.dot' template. A "system is dangerously
low in resources" error notice being a tell-tale sign.

Take a look at the MS Knowledge Base article :-
"WD2000: Invalid Page Fault When Normal.dot Is a Document"

Best of luck

Hello,
Why won't Word 2000 docs open when I have McAfee VirusScan 7.0
loaded?
Get error messages "Avsynmgr has caused an error in MCSCAN32.DLL.
Avsynmgr will now close." Same message with Vshwin32, Vsmain, and
Winword. Is the problem ME, Word, or McAfee?
JT

Typical McAfee erreor, Try unininststallining it.
