I have a Win95 with AVG Free on board that I keep up to date and use as a
back-up to my Win98se! If all else fails, my wife's laptop with XP can
always be used :-)

Firewall has spoken up plenty, but I think I've got it's rules set fine now.

JUST, when all is going well, do make one full system backup, & protect it
well. After that, keep another backup on a monthly basis. If ever the
monthly one should become flawed or infected, go to the one that you know is
good.
