Noel, What a pumkin he is. I told him to scrap Norton months ago and I
thought he did. Turns out he's still got it installed. I've told him to
remove it and try again.

Thanks,

Craig.

Noel, many thanks for your reply. He has tried your suggestion and
still
no
luck.

Craig.

Tell him to run this command - it will only work in Windows XPSP2....

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

See if that works for him.

Hi Guys,

This is weird, I have a friend at work who came to me asking for
help
as
he
is having the exact same problem but he is running XP. He has
contacted
BT
broadband and they say as he can ping it must be a problem with his
PC.

When I ping my DNS servers they respond, which makes sense since in
one
of my
previous posts I mentioned that when I ping a URL it returns the IP
of
the
site - ergo, the DNS servers are accessible.

As with "LoneStar", I have connectivity through the same ISP/DNS
servers
with 4
other computers, Win98, WinXP, Win2K and one other WinME which are
all
working
fine so the server(s) must be functioning properly. It's isolated
to
this one
computer, and since other users have the problem it seems important
to
discover
the cause. I may have to give up and reformat also, but am willing
to
continue
working on this just so we can figure it out to help others that
may
soon
experience it.

On another note, my system is dying at about 10 minutes or less,
not
15
as
LoneStar's was.

Have you tried pinging your DNS server? - this sounds more and
more
like a
problem with your ISP, rather than one at your end
If you can successfully ping the DNS server, but nothing beyond
it,
then it
may be that the server is either poisoned or not functioning
properly -
and
that is definitely your ISP's problem.

I checked it in Normal Mode, then went to Safe Mode to be sure
that
the old
NIC
wasn't listed (so no conflicts there). And BTW, my comment
about
pinging
not
working - not entirely correct. The DNS servers DO return the
IP
of
sites
when
I use the UNC or URL, but it just gets a "request timed out".
Apparently
the
connection out to the DNS servers work?

No malware detected, which didn't surprise me as the system was
using
Panda
w/truprevent and it was never disabled and I had done a full
scan
with it
also.
I completely disabled it (takes disabling a .vxd to keep it
from
loading
"extraneous" stuff) to make sure it wasn't interfering during
this
testing
phase.

On another note, I tried just booting and waiting 15 minutes
before
trying
to
get on the internet and it wouldn't let me! So you don't have
to
be
actively
accessing the internet for it to "time out". It seems to start
from
the
moment
you get logged in.

Did you check the Device Manager in Safe Mode, after
installing
the
new
NIC
(perhaps a little desperate here, but...)??

What malware did my suggestions find - if any?

HELP!
Wow, I've got the same problem on a friend's computer
running
WinME.
I
have
tried everything that Mike suggested, in addition to Noel's
and
even
used
a
program that cleans/wipes the winsock/lsp/dun
software/registry
information and
re-installs it to see if that fixes it (it didn't). This
only
started
happening
about a week ago, up till then everything was great.
One of the problems that I see, in addition to the
original
problem,
is
that
occasionally I also can't ping external sites once the
"internet"
connectivity
shuts down (either via the IP or UNC).
I thought it might be a NIC problem too, so I
uninstalled/removed the
NIC and
put a new one in. Same problem. I also disabled everything
that
was
running at
startup and several vxd's that were "add-ons" that I knew
wouldn't
crash
the
system.
When I looked at the drivers loaded for the NIC, I noticed
that
it
said
the
tcpip.sys wasn't loaded so I replaced it (using the WinME
boot
disk
"minimal"),
and found that I had to put it in the System directory
instead
of
the
System32/drivers for it to find and load it. Still no
difference.

In addition to Mike's suggestion....

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that
A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of
all
files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants
of
the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from
www.lavasoftusa.com,
install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other
such
nasties
from
your system.

also run the LSPFix from here

See below for ref......

Thanks Noel, but I've done as you said befo no help.
The
problem
is
much deeper, since my connectivity only dies "after
approximately 15
minutes after bootup" and since the problem is not an
Internet
Explorer
issue (Windows Media Player will not work after 15 mins,
or
Firefox
browser, or any other app that uses the Net). But
remember,
all is
great
immediately after bootup or restart!!!! I can go to
many,
many
sites
for
about 15 minutes!

I keep thinking TCP/IP configurations, etc, etc, but note
that
I can
ping
and tracert after Internet connectivity is lost. I've
looked
