Thanks - most helpful. I will try what you suggest and report further. I
work "nights" so it may be later in the day when I report but in the
meantime I should perhaps have pointed out that in safe mode, the CD drive
is not seen by Windows, even though in Device Manager it's there and is
seemingly trouble free. The Main HDD, partitioned as C:\ and D:\ are
running in msdoa compatibility mode, suggesting there is a fault. Running
scandisk on C:\ (D is ok), results in an error message saying that "another
application is preventing this utility to work on this drive, suggest
closing the application and try again". As the main problem came to a head
after inserting a CD rom, I just suspected the CD Rom drive. Previous to
this I had to reinstall Windows ME as Windows failed to boot for some error,
which I cannot now recall. After doing so and installing quite a number of
programs, installing the dedicated drivers from Toshiba's site and updating
windows via the update site all seemed well for a few days. I used the CD
rom extensively without hitch, although from time to time after shutting the
laptop down, it failed to respond to the power button, necessitating a
gentle wiggle of the screen or a tap on the side or a closing and reopening
of the lid.

The current problem manifested whilst loading a cd as soon as the cd rom
"clicked" indicating that the reading of the cd was underway, immediately
the laptop froze and upon eventually getting it to boot back up, I got the
"Check Sum error on Cd Rom" message but after it then booted up into
windows, I got a single and brief message saying that "there is a problem
with the cd rom drive please reinstall windows". Obviously I don't want to
go to the trouble again of reloading windows until I have an angle on what
is wrong here.

I hope this further detail helps you further, to diagnose the fault(s),
hopefully prior to reporting later.

This looks like a hardware problem to me - either the CMOS battery is
dying, or your motherboard.

Try removing the main battery from the laptop, and unplugging from the
mains - leave it for half an hour.
Then attach to the mains again, and reboot - what exact errors do you get
in trying to boot to Safe Mode?? Note especially any time/date errors.

I'm running a Toshiba S1800-400 LapTop, running ME. Suddenly it's
starting to play up with windows freezing producing either: -

OE 017F BFF8E64B or
OE 0167 BFF9A0F

BSOD's

Now it's refusing to boot past the safemode startup - if I check start
windows normally, it just comes back to the safemode option. Booting up
to safemode usually hangs the os after a minute or two and when booting,
now shows "Bad Checksum (Rom)"

I noticed prior to these problems, that boot up sometimes didn't occur
until I tapped the Laptop and also sometimes the os would freeze when
inserting a cd or dvd rom.

Am I suspecting a damaged or broken CD/DVD Rom drive?

Anyone else have this problem or could give me advice please?

TIA

Paul
