Default Windows ME Defragmenter does not work

Thanks Mike, and why am I not too surprised that you didn't take it further?

Amongst the chaff, Mike S wrote that not only did he have Norton installed
(and I think Mike M has well alluded to the potential catastrophe of having
Norton products installed on a WinMe system) but somewhat more worrying is
the spectre, where you "ended up reinstalling Windows ME" - which I take to
mean that you reinstalled it over itself. In other words it was NOT a clean
(fresh) install - which is very likely to have caused a 'version soup' -
with all of its attendant problems.

If that is the case, then I personally wouldn't even bother attempting to
try and 'fix' things. I would be far more inclined to cut my losses and save
myself an awful lot of time and effort by starting over with a completely
fresh install - assuming you have all the 'original' installation disks etc.
Just try to recover any important (personal) data from your hard disk before
you start.

I suspect that you may have an OEM version of WinMe - in which case follow
your User Manual's instructions for a 'factory fresh' install (WITHOUT
NORTON). However, If you've got MS copy of the WinMe (retail) CD, then start
by reading the following instructions :-
"Windows Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271673/en-us
Also, be sure that you've still got a copy of the 25 digit product key,
before you start.

Good luck

Symantec/Norton

Better known as the Win Me destroyer - not that Norton is much better on
any other operating system. There really should be a class action suit
against Symantec for passing off their bloatware system destroyer as an
anti-virus product.

What is the IFSMGR? I searched for the file but could not find it.

This file, with many others, is built in to vmm32.vxd when Win Me is first
installed. IFSMGR.VXD is a virtual device driver and is the (Microsoft)
Installable File System ManaGeR. In other words is used when reading and
writing files

Thanks for your help Mart.
My problems started when Windows ME would not run at all. I could
access DOS and was able to see that the directory- and file-
structures seemed intact. I ended up reinstalling Windows ME but it
still would not start in unprotected mode. So I used the step wise
option and was able start up Windows ME when Symantec/Norton was
deactivated. Later it also ran without deactivating Norton (i.e. a
regular startup).
I then ran into problems with defrag as described below. Follwing
Mart´s suggestion I then ran defrag in Safe Mode. I did this twice.
The first time Scandisk had restarted 10 times after being stopped by
some " other application writing to the disk" (still in Safe Mode).
The second time (still in Safe Mode) Scandisk ran through and so did
defrag. I´m now in the proces of running Sandisk and defrag in
unprotected mode to see if it will work. Are there any other
suggestions?
